Vote NO to LISD Tax Increase PDF Print E-mail

LISD teachers and school level administration are doing an “exemplary” job of educating my children. I experience first-hand the high standards, hard work and dedication that benefit our children. In an effort to keep that standard high and the District “accountable,” I encourage you to vote against the LISD tax increase on the September 14th ballot.

In these poor economic times with record foreclosure rates and trimmed family budgets, the District has no business raising our taxes! The Board and Administration need to work harder to cut expenses and plan better. In recent years, the District’s budget has ballooned to $500 Million dollars! Think of the District as a $500 Million company, one in which we are all stockholders.  Since 2005, the District student enrollment increased 7.04% while administrative head count increased 16.5% and their salaries grew 28.5%. During the same five years, teacher head count grew 10.49% while their salaries DECREASED 14.11%. Yet with all this increased administration, there is no succession plan for retiring Superintendent Dr. Jerry Roy. Why not? As stockholders, shouldn’t we expect better planning from our management team?  This lack of planning now has Dr. Roy as a contract employee until they find a replacement.  What is that contract costing us?

As stockholders, we have seen a huge number of “non-education” building projects. In Flower Mound  this year, Marcus High School has a new multi-million dollar stadium and FMHS has a fancy new “Field House” aka Boys’ Football locker room. This is after new weight rooms were built at the middle schools recently, even though the old ones were fine. The Board and Administration are quick to silence a voter’s (stockholder’s) concern about all this building by saying “This spending was approved by the voters in the 2006 or 2008 bond referendum.” Who among us is still spending money like we did in 2006?  Spending the money on brick and mortar is one thing, but paying the annual interest on those bonds is a whole other issue! In the recently approved LISD budget; “Debt Service” is nearly $90 MILLION, per year!!! That is 18% of the total budget!!! Add on the maintenance and up keep and you have expenses we stockholders are saddled with for many years.  Is this prudent management?

As a stockholder, we should expect LISD leverage all its resources before digging deeper into our pockets. They have resisted tapping their mineral rights and a multi-million dollar reserve account to close the deficit.

They had a blanket mineral lease on all their land which has expired. A renewed lease would provide a huge signing bonus, possibly as much as $6.5 MILLION!! The gas well health concerns are vastly exaggerated and drilling technology allows the well to be a safe distance, further minimizing any remaining health concerns. The natural gas production payments would pay big monthly “dividends.” Best of all, none of this money has to be shared with Austin through Robin Hood. All of it stays right here in the District.

By the Administration’s own admission, the Reserve Fund is earning much smaller returns since market performance and deposit interest rates are dismal. If there was ever a “rainy day” for some of the fund to be spent on, this is it.

I’ll sum it up by saying: Vote “NO” on the LISD property tax increase and encourage the District to use the 28% increased Administrative brain power to come up with better solutions….….Remember, not voting is NOT a NO Vote, it’s a cop-out!

This is how it started in California...the hollowing out by an educational industrial complex. Ask yourself one question: Would the wheels really fall off LISD if you had one administrator for every 100-200 teachers?

My bet is that the teachers would teach just fine thank you.

This election is not about the kids or the teachers. It's about maintaining the perogatives of a bloated protected class.

*Use* this emergency to set things right. Start with the superintendent.

Once the board cleans up this mess - promise them anything they need.

Oh my, here we go, 60% of the electorate are dumb logic. Let me ask you a question David? Did you buy your wife a diamond ring? Do you know for a fact her ring was not a "blood diamond?" How can you live with your hypocrisy? You get the point (I hope). Consuming a commodity and demanding it is produced responsibly and not in urban areas is not unreasonable. Also, why not drill ANWR first, and then our neighborhoods? If we REALLY need to drill, why are we not drilling there? Oh, and the mayor moved her child away from Liberty, you forgot to mention that fact.

NODRILLING&NOTAXES - My concern about the Liberty wells where out of ignorance, a condition that was cured with education, facts and an open-mind. During this time, both of my children went to Liberty Elementary, without incident or illness. In fact, after several years of wells near Liberty there is no increase in student illness or absenteeism. In fact, our new mayor moved her child to Liberty last spring! Where is the danger?

In addition, I refuse to be a hypocrite!I like my warm gas heated house, gas hot water and gas kitchen stove. How can anyone protest drilling our own natural resources while American lives and limbs are sacrificed overseas protecting some other countries’ natural resources? How can you live with that hypocrisy???

These are some of the facts that have changed my mind. Maybe you will start seeing the facts too.

LISD does not need a tax increase or gas leases. They need to trim the fat, and use that rainy day fund. The last thing they should do is subject students to gas drilling.
Mr. Johnson, remember the days when you stormed Town Hall pleading to not drill next to Liberty Elementary? I do. What changed your mind$$$$$$$$$

Quoting VOTE YES:
With two kids in school, you can count on two yes votes from our household. Our kids deserve the best resources we can give them. And if you have kids in LISD, you owe it to them. Attracting the best and brightest educators will make a difference in your children's lives.

IMHO, your kids and you deserve a quality education with the current funds collected through property taxes. The administrators should manage wisely the excess in the good times and use those in the bad times (now) and not raise taxes. Isn't this what families are expected to do? Is your family or corporation getting more money these days or are they doing more with less?

If a gas well at the Hilliard property is the new reality in Flower Mound (like it or not), isn't it time we broaden the rhetoric to include the ideas from which the public will benefit?

A gas lease for LISD would generate millions of dollars for programs and debt retirement.

The Town of Flower Mound’s Gerault and Baker's Branch parks aren't far from gas wells being drilling in Lewisville. Town mineral rights could generate revenue for a park trust fund or develop a Town recreation area at Twin Coves on Lake Grapevine. Other projects could include additional soccer fields, baseball diamonds and hiking trails. Maybe even a new Town Hall with a bigger council chambers and room for Town departments that are now paying rent for off-site office space.

There is a lot of good that could come from gas lease revenue. Are we ready to start looking for the silver lining in all this?

Quoting @ Education or Gas:
I guess it is only politicizing an issue when the other side does it.

Your post is reasonable and you are correct. The point was made as a counter-point, it would not have been made without the anti-folks using it first.

Well, for once I agree with David Johnson on the "No new taxes" bit. Funny how you do not mention his pro-drilling stance as a reason to not vote for a tax increase. I guess it is only politicizing an issue when the other side does it.

I was wondering when someone in the Flower Mound anti-gas group would twist the LISD tax ratification election into something related to gas drilling. On the Flower Mound Cares facebook page, one of the sign-waving, vocal anti-gas people stated “As for myself, if it will help LISD stand strong and not re-sign their lease, I'm willing to pay more school taxes”. This person is would be satisfied if everyone pays more taxes to get what they want. If you take time to read the post, nothing is said about kids, teachers or anything about education; it’s all about what this person desires. Selfish motives revealed again and they want you to pay for their end game. LISD families in Lewisville, Carrollton, Double Oak, Highland Village, Frisco, Grapevine, Argyle, The Colony, Copper Canyon, Plano, Coppell and Hebron; do you want to pay more taxes to help the anti-drilling group in Flower Mound?
