Marcus High School sophomore Cameron Blackmon has decided to complete a very unique service project to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Double Oak teen is hosting a 5K Fun Run benefiting the Briarwood Retreat Center in Argyle and said he came up with the idea based on his own experiences at the center.

“I've been going to Briarwood ever since I was in the second grade,” Blackmon said. “John, the program director, has always been very nice to me, so I figured I would do it for them.

“Last year, when I was trying to come up with ideas for my project, he said something about being an Eagle Scout himself, so it made it more personal for me.”

Briarwood Retreat Center is a Lutheran camp based off of Copper Canyon Road, and the Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. this Saturday, June 14, at Double Oak Town Hall.

Blackmon said that he has one major objective for the project.

“My goal is to improve the condition of their Co-op course,” Blackmon said. “The Co-Op course is a team building cooperation course with several different games designed to teach people leadership and how to work together.”

Registration for the Fun Run is $15 per person, and Blackmon said the project is important to him for a couple of reasons.

“First and foremost, it is a way for me to show some leadership and see what I've got,” Blackmon said. “It's a way for me to help a place that has been good to me for a long time.

“This will help me to become an Eagle Scout, but it will also teach me leadership and a sense of accomplishment.”
