Entry medians to get new look |

 With another dry, hot summer in full effect, Lantana Fresh Water District officials are implementing new drought tolerant landscaping for the neighborhood entry medians.
Kevin Mercer, General Manager of Lantana's two fresh water supply districts, said there has been some concern from his staff and FWSD board members on the condition of the flowers in the entry medians.
"We can't keep the seasonal color alive due to the large amount of concrete around the medians throwing off so much heat," said Mercer.
He asked the district’s landscape vendor, Gold Landscape, to make some changes to a couple of medians to see if it would improve the situation.
"We are conducting a test case on the Brenham and Laurel entries where we replaced the seasonal color with decomposed granite, red yucca, and some boulders," said Mercer.
“We’ve gotten some feedback so far from a few residents and it's all been positive.”
Aside from less watering, another potential plus is an annual savings in ongoing landscape maintenance costs, Mercer said.
The Lantana Fresh Water Supply District #6 and #7 boards voted to phase in the new landscaping at their monthly meeting on July 17.
Not all of the color is going away, as flowers would still be planted and maintained on both sides of the entryways.
“Predominately where we’re getting the burning is at the median adjacent to all that concrete. On the sides, we've had a lot better success and will still maintain seasonal colors there.”
