A new school zone will greet motorists starting this week on Lantana's main thoroughfare.

The school zone will be in effect 200 feet on either side of the busy intersection of Lantana Trail and Stacee Lane, encompassing a crosswalk used by students walking or biking to Blanton Elementary and Harpool Middle School.

Lantana Fresh Water Supply District #6 & #7 board members approved the $17,590 price tag for the three school zone signs with flashing lights late last year.

Two existing pedestrian-activated flashing signs at the crosswalk will remain.

"Board members asked the FWSD staff to keep the signs there for pedestrians crossing at other times of the day," said Max Miller, Vice-President of Fresh Water Supply District #6.

This is the second school zone on Lantana Trail. The first one at the intersection of Rayzor Rd. near E.P. Rayzor Elementary School was approved in 2007.
