Flower Mound Walmart set to open soon PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 06 January 2012 15:10

A new Walmart Neighborhood Market will open in Flower Mound next Wednesday, Jan. 18, with a 55,000-square-foot store designed to offer quick access to low-cost groceries, prescriptions and household products.

Doors to the new store at 2800 Flower Mound Rd. in  Lake Forest Plaza will open at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, following a 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Occupying space that has been vacant since 2008, the new Walmart Neighborhood Market is a welcome investment in Flower Mound that will serve as an anchor in an important retail location for our community. We look forward to the grand opening celebration on Jan. 18," said Michael Ryan, Director of Community Affairs for Flower Mound.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market will provide southern Denton County shoppers with another destination for groceries, including fresh produce, frozen foods, meat and dairy products, and organic items. For those on the go, the deli offers hot rotisserie chicken, a wide variety of meats, cheese and freshly prepared foods. Customers can pick up cakes and freshly-made bread in the bakery.

"With our smaller format, our store is perfect for those on the go. Whether they're stocking up or need to pick up just a few items, our customers will be able to find what they need quickly and easily," said store manager Anthony Porchia. "Our customers will be able to find familiar brands and local products at great values, right in their own neighborhood."

Shoppers will also appreciate the convenience of the store's drive-up lane, along with a full selection of health-related products in the health and beauty area. Additional areas include stationery, paper goods, pet products and hardware items. Customers can also print their own digital photos at the store. The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market plans to employ approximately 90 associates. Several associates who have transferred to the new store from existing Walmart locations have worked for the company for more than 10 years.

"Walmart provides job opportunities and career choices for everyone, from seniors looking for supplemental income to young people wanting to gain work experience," Porchia said. Like most Walmart store managers, Porchia started his career with Walmart as an hourly associate. He joined the company in 1994 as an overnight stocker at a store in Springdale, Ark.

In the spirit of giving back, Porchia said that grants from the Walmart Foundation will be presented to community organizations throughout the year.

Community and business leaders will join Walmart associates at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18 for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor Melissa Northern will join Porchia and other associates as they cut the ribbon to the new store. The Flower Mound Marcus High School Band will perform the national anthem as the colors are posted.

Putting politics aside, The THR Hospital and Continuum rehab have been great additions to our local medical community. For years many Flower Mound residents went out of Denton County to seek medical care. We now have a growing and thriving medical community in Flower Mound and as a small business owner, I am proud of that.

If anyone was wondering if Filidoro would run again for town council again you should read the article in the news connection, Filidoro vouches for quality of local hospitals. The article states that Filidoro “needs to make campaign events and walk the neighborhoods in preparation for the May elections”. The article also describes Filidoro as “intensely political”, now that is a huge understatement. Pamela was correct when she posted the NFL is usually tripping over each other to get a quote in the paper. Here is an example and if Filidoro vouches for anything I am automatically skeptical.

They can't make gas the issue or they have to admit they didn't do enough. They certainly can't talk about economic development because we have none. Hmmmm.....maybe they could run on "a vote for us guarantees you a spot on one of Dennis McKaige's (oops the Town's) boards"

Since many comments are about the “Not-For-Long” candidate’s lack of leadership and their continued blunders. What will the NFL’s election platform be? I think most can see the meddling, the cronyism and the haughty attitudes – but what case will they try to make to get people to vote for them in May? I imagine they will try to somehow make gas drilling an issue again. Even though most people have moved past the topic and the new ordinance is complete, it seems reasonable to think they will attempt to fuel the gas issue during the campaign. What do you think?

@WebbIsGreat, This is a typical Filidoro or Lyda post. Narrow minded, self-centered people react with negativity, but when these people are also socially awkward they often start with snide remarks. NFL will be nasty in this upcoming campaign. NFL will ask others to do their dirty work and as the campaign progresses NFL will start to understand their supporters from their last election are NOT their supporters now. This is when they may really start getting ugly.

Webbisgreat=Lyda...why don't you try working for the residents instead of making snide comments for a change

Glad to hear that a long vacant store front will be returning as a functioning, tax paying contributor to our community.

We still have several more to go, especially those next to Kroger on 1171.

Maybe after the May election, Kroger will allow a new council to right the wrongs from last year.

I think what Mike was trying to say was that the new store is located in the area of town where the students attend Flower Mound HS rather than Marcus. Also, Marcus is located more than twice as far from the new store than is FMHS.

Usually Northern, Filidoro and Lyda (NFL) are tripping over each other to get a quote in the paper about their (hollow) economic development efforts. Funny how “they” are silent on this story, “they” were probably paralyzed deciding which way to lean regarding Walmart coming to town. The hesitation and silence by the NFL forced a town employee to deliver the quote about America’s top retailer’s arrival. Just another example of their lack of leadership.
