Updated cancer investigation results released PDF Print E-mail

State health officials have conducted a new investigation of cancer occurrences in Flower Mound, updating a previous study done last year by including more recent cancer data.

From 2008-2010, leukemia and lymphoma cases fell within the expected ranges for zip codes 75022 and 75028, according to the report.  However, the number of cases of breast cancer in females was statistically higher than average.

"The increase in incidence of breast cancer is likely due to the rapid increase in Flower Mound’s population over the last decade, a 41 percent increase in population from 1999-2008," said Christine Mann, with the Department of State Health Services

Since the expected number of cases in Flower Mound was calculated on the basis of population data from the 2000 Census, the breast cancer result likely underestimated the number of expected cases, according to the report.

Last year, concern about a possible cancer cluster by Flower Mound residents prompted the Texas Department of State Health Services to examine the occurrence of cancer in the 75022 and 75028 zip codes from 1999 to 2008.

A cancer cluster is defined as a greater than expected number of cancers among people who live or work in the same area and who develop or die from the same cancer within a short time of each other, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The original concerns were related to fears that benzene was coming from area gas drilling and could be causing cancer.  The initial cancers focused on were leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Subsequent concerns included breast cancer and childhood brain/central nervous system (CNS) cancer.

"We understand residents’ concerns and will continue to monitor and confirm the number of cancers diagnosed in Flower Mound residents," said Mann.

Mayor N testified in front of the Texas House Committee on Energy Resources that Flower Mound wanted to “expand our fire house” and that the town tried to get Williams to move the pipeline 20 feet “and instead decided to sue us”. She is dreaming up the expansion plans for the Fire Station and none of the NFL&H team ever intended to allow the pipeline to be placed next to the Atmos pipeline that goes across the Fire Station property in the existing easement. FYI - not even the town can build on an easement. If she will testify half truths to Texas State representatives , what kind of story do you think she will tell us?

The statement released by Filidoro and his puppet Northern makes me sick. Maybe we ought to do a study on political pandering causing vomiting.

What in the world does household income have to do with the fact that people can be lied to. If income is your basis for measuring intelligence then Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohan must be freaking geniuses. It was really disgusting today that Northern and Filodoro seemed disappointed that the report came back clean. But great news, they will keep spending our money to prove themselves wrong. They must be online with Sheen and think they are "winning".

Always concerned - I'm pretty sure that Truth B Told was referring to the anti-drilling crowd as "dolts", not all the residents of Flower Mound. Personally, I prefer "cretins" to "dolts" to describe this amusing little cross-section of our Town, but that's just me. It is quite funny that you comment on someone else's intellect after making a false assumption regarding the target group and then take the leap of faith that average income levels in one community equate to intellectual bandwith. If you really believe that, then the professionals who work in the oil and gas business must be pretty smart because they are well paid.

Yep, flower Mound is full of "Dolts"

You can keep your job in the gas and oil fields TRUTH BE TOLD, your comments mirror your intellect.

Estimated median household income in 2009: $108,427 (it was $95,416 in 2000)
Flower Mound:$108,427
Texas: $48,259

Note how "Always Concerned" totally ignores the study results and just starts throwing out wild accusations - typical emotional, irrational reaction when confronted with facts. Maybe if I put the net result in large caps it will help these dolts: NO EVIDENCE OF A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CANCER CASES IN FLOWER MOUND AND GAS DRILLING. It's tough for them, because the lie about gas drilling and cancer has been told so many times that they just accept it as truth.

How about all those that continue to use oil and gas to heat their homes, cook, generate electricity, transportation, etc and don't mind importing it from other places because they know in other places drilling meets all the same standards that FM demands ......

The real entertainment is watching the people that sold their dignity, or actually work for big gas and oil to try to support the insanity of gas drilling in a family environment. I really do like how you expose your stupidity. Everything you say in false, and the entire community doesn't even bother with your type anymore. The momentum and numbers reflect outrage against gas drilling. Its only a matter of time before you will have to find some other activity to spread your lies.

Judging from all the "thumbs down" votes they are definitely visiting this page. Just keeping quiet to avoid giving me the opportunity to say "told ya so".

Eric - I don't think we'll hear from the FM Scares crowd on this. First, they have convinced a lot of impressionable folks that gas drilling causes cancer, regardless of the lack of supporting evidence, so they'll be content to ignore this information. Second, they are just too busy these days ripping into each other over their preferred Council candidates. It is fun to watch them scratch and slap each other in the blogosphere; gotta love a good cat fight!
