Guyer holds off Birdville to advance in playoffs PDF Print E-mail

The Guyer football team slugged it out with Birdville on Saturday afternoon at Dragon Stadium in Southlake, and for the fourth straight week emerged with a playoff victory, defeating the Hawks by a score of 52-42 to advance to the state semi-finals.

DJ Breedlove drew first blood for the Wildcats, breaking an 84-yard touchdown run in the first minute of the game to give Guyer a 7-0 lead.

Jerrod Heard scored on an 11-yard run three minutes later to make it 14-0 Wildcats.

Birdville cut the deficit to seven on a touchdown of its own, but Heard tacked on an eight-yard run to make it 21-7 Guyer at the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks scored first in the second quarter to make it 21-14, but kicker Brad Grems kicked a 28-yard field goal and Ellis Jefferson scored on a 43-yard pass from Heard to make it 31-14.

Guyer led 31-21 at the half.

Heard and Jefferson hooked up again, this time on a 6-yard pass in the third quarter, to make it 38-21 Guyer heading into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, both squads started trading punches, as the Hawks scored on a 35-yard run, followed by a touchdown pass from Heard to Nate Maki.

Birdville answered with a 58-yard touchdown pass, and Guyer came right back with a 44-yard touchdown run from Richard Whitaker.

The Hawks scored on the ensuing drive on a touchdown pass to cut their deficit to 10 points with 4:08 left in the game, and Guyer leading 52-42.

The Wildcats got the ball back, and were able to run out the clock to get the victory.

Heard combined for nearly 340 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.

Guyer (12-2) will square off with Tyler's ISD John Tyler High School (13-1) at Midlothian Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The community is invited to a pep rally at Guyer High School on Friday morning at 9:40 a.m.
