Wildcats advance to regional semi-finals PDF Print E-mail

The Guyer football team will live to play another game, as the Wildcats won their regional quarterfinal matchup against the Amarillo Sandies Saturday by a score of 38-30 at Grande Stadium in Midland.

The Wildcats scored first on a 14-yard run from DJ Breedlove in the first quarter to make it 7-0.

Amarillo drove down to the Guyer 15 and kicked a field goal to make it 7-3 on the ensuing drive, and Jerrod Heard connected with Ellis Jefferson on a 43-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 14-3 in favor of Guyer.

Amarillo answered with a touchdown on a 4th and goal from the 4-yard line late in the second, but Guyer came right back scored on a keeper from Heard to make it 21-10 Guyer.

As time expired before the break, Amarillo cut the deficit to eight points on a 28-yard field goal.

The Sandies kicked another field goal late in the third quarter to make it 21-16 Guyer, but Heard scored on a 1-yard run late in third to extend the Wildcats lead to 12 points.

Amarillo came right back with a touchdown pass on their ensuing drive, and it was 28-23 in the fourth quarter in favor of Guyer.

Brad Grems kicked a 36-yard field goal for the Wildcats on the following drive to make it 31-23 Guyer, and took over on downs after holding Amarillo on their ensuing drive.

Breedlove scored on an 11-yard run on their drive to seal the deal with a 38-23 lead and 2:13 remaining in the game.

Amarillo would score again and attempt an onside kick, but Guyer would recover to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

Guyer will take on Birdville in the regional semi-finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.
