Rezoning will cause traffic issues PDF Print E-mail

I am concerned traffic could be greatly impacted by the LISD Middle School Rezoning Proposal 1 plan.

FM 2499 and Morriss Road are already congested in the mornings.  Many residents drive their child to school on their way to work.  If west Flower Mound residents are rezoned to Forestwood Middle School the congestion on FM 2499 and Morriss Road would increase, not to mention the side streets between those two heavily traveled roads.

This would not only affect the children who have been rezoned but also the north residents of Flower Mound who are trying to commute to work.

The rezoning committee has worked hard to come up with options.  I hope they continue to examine the option that works best for all of Flower Mound.

Thank you, George. Interesting!
Do you know what the projections are for next year?

George, I'm curious. Do you have the numbers if nothing is changed?

Current number:
MC 100.3%
FW 50.9%
SR 100.5%

I would like to say to those who oppose the elementary schools being split that it happened to all 3 of my children and it was actually a good thing, especially for my youngest -- it broke up a click that had excluded her for 3 years and she began to bloom and excel. Then when they all joined back up at Marcus she was at an advantage because she knew many more students than those who went from Donald to Forestwood.

Ms. Hassett, I couldn't agree with you more. It will be a traffic nightmare and an unnecessary one at that. One can only hope that this current ridiculous proposal is just a negotiating tool and they'll get real, real soon.

I have no children in FM schools now, but we drive the streets during morning rush hour and leave early to save commute time. We'll have to leave even earlier if this goes into effect. Plus we own property and it will certainly affect values.

I am appalled that we've had families that can't attend a school that's only a few blocks from their home since SRMS opened and now we are seeking to add more of that surrounding McKamy. What are they thinking!

I truly feel for all of you families.

Matthew, I appreciate that you were so resourceful growing up and you were probably much better for it all. However, the traffic is heavier, now and there are more crazies out there, too. I would hate to have 6th graders crossing 2499 or 3040. Is it even safe for crossing guards? So of course, this plan would involve much more busing and traffic congestion along with higher costs for LISD and parents plus higher taxes for all. It's perfectly ridiculous!

George, in either options, everyone who has to cross 2499 will need to be bussed. Regardless of proximity, lisd has to provide bus if a major street need to be crossed. So from that angle, there is no proposal which is better. If proposal 2 extended till 2499, that may reduce some amount of busing.

Right now, many student walk or bike home from school which will not be an option if proposal 1 is chosen. So they either have to take buses or their parents have to take them cross 2499, either way, the cost and traffic will become a huge impact. Now, about the proximity and numbers which the committee claim they are sole based on. Foe middle school, proposal one just does not make any sense by looking at the map. It looks like forestwood stretches its long arm, reaching into wellington's pocket. Why do students need to go to forestwood when they have a school next door? This is not based on proximity, not at all. Numbers, the new enrollment rates each school at two proposals are:
MC FW SR
Proposal 1: 75% 87% 66%
Proposal 2: 84% 73% 75%

By looking at these numbers, which one makes more sense? Proposal 2, no doubt.

If only more people would trust their kids to get themselves to school. I went to Donald, Forestwood, and FMHS and I always walked (Bussed to FMHS, I lived in Lake Forest). Some kids are farther away, but the trail system connects to these schools. Perhaps students that are west of 2499 should be bussed, which would alleviate traffic concerns. Side streets in these areas are designed to discourage cut-thru traffic, and they are rarely faster than staying on the main roads, so I doubt many people will use them.
