School board should consider other rezoning options |

Dear LISD Board Members: Thank you in advance for your service to the LISD community. Board service is a difficult task and possibly even more difficult during boundary discussions. So, as you can imagine, this letter is regarding the boundary discussion.
I live in Wellington neighborhood and have had the discussion with many neighbors with similar concerns and worry that our voice isn't going to be heard. With that, I thought I would reach out to the board members and start the discussion.
When we bought our houses in our master planned neighborhood, the appeal is that we have access to high performing local schools. Our elementary schools (Liberty and Wellington) are wonderful and the reputation allows neighbors to feel confident in the schools. Many of these students have gone on to McKamy Middle School and the reputation has followed.
We are willing to accept that in the master plan, a middle school was scheduled to be built close to us, but now it won't be for years due to reallocation of bond dollars. So with that, our neighborhood should not be the ones punished by sending neighborhood children to Forestwood Middle School over 3 miles away, causing extra busses in our neighborhood, additional traffic congestion, property values to be up in limbo and not allowing a neighborhood to dedicate itself to its long-term middle schools with volunteers and donations.
With that, I would like to ask if you would be willing consider one of the following options as to what could be done to hopefully satisfy current supporters of the LISD.
-Allow our neighborhood to have the option to attend either middle school without offering transportation service
-Have overlapping boundaries so families can choose either middle school within all middle schools. This truly allows school choice.
-Redraw other boundaries around all middle schools to keep kids within neighborhoods.
I am sure there could be other alternatives, but the main point is to keep our neighborhood together, as how a master planned community is intended. Thank you so much for your time and service. Our Wellington neighborhood hopes to have a chance to voice our concerns to you!

Can anyone explain why this committee didn't use the school district's own definition of neighborhood as a baseline for making this decision. Just using the two mile rule(if you live over 2 miles from the school your assigned to you get bused)you eliminate a lot of this unwanted busing. The children that are within two miles of McKamy can fit comfortably in the school with no overcrowding. I wish someone could answer why this committee disregarded the two mile rule completely.
I understand your wish to keep the neighborhood together. I'm sure many in FloMo feel the same way about their neighborhood. What I really like is that you presented some other ideas to consider that involve school "choice." Maybe the board would consider some form of your ideas as part of a rezoning change in phases, instead of dropping the axe on everyone next school year.
What Ms. Huber is really saying is bus someone else's child not mine. Somehow, Ms. Huber seems to think that her child has more rights than the children of Lake Forest, Stafford Estates, Northshore or Walden Estates that are just as close if not closer than most of Wellington.
I respect Ms. Hubers right to petition the school board to look at other options. I do wonder if she would be batting an eye if were only Old Settlers that was impacted. The facebook pages Ms. Hubers neighbors have put up clearly state they believe they are more entitled than the rest of Flower Mound.
