1 dead, many displaced after Denton apartment fire

One man is dead and more than 20 people were displaced Sunday when their apartment building caught fire, according to the Denton Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to an apartment complex in the 1200 block block of Dallas Drive just before 2 a.m. Sunday to find heavy fire and multiple victims trapped in their apartments, according to a DFD news release. Crews went to work on dousing the fire and rescuing trapped victims. During the search for potential victims, they located one man who was already deceased. His identity has not been released.

A second fire alarm was called and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 2:47 a.m., and fire units cleared the scene before 5 a.m. The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined because of the large number of possible heat sources and contents in the building.

Eight units were heavily damaged in the blaze. The Red Cross and apartment management have found housing for the displaced residents.
