ISS Sightings

Postby Common Sense Al » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:25 pm

Anyone going to try to see the International Space Station go by? It should be "flying" overhead shortly. I'm going to try to see it tonight... there are also more upcoming possible sightings.

UPDATE: Saw it! Pretty cool... wasn't as bright as I was expecting and almost missed it but it was there.

Just happened to read your post, and went out side in time to catch it. I didn't see it until it was about half way across due to the high clouds. I tried to get a pic, but didn't have the time to prepare - had the shutter speed set too slow, and holding the camera by hand.

Looks like Sunday will be the best chance.

My series of thoughts as it was happening....
1. Oh whats that?...
2. Is that a plane?
3. No.. too high, too small, moving too fast, has to be it.
4. Need to take a picture...
5. Find it in the view finder - manually focus
6. Click ... damn shutter speed too slow
7. Try to hold still, waiting waiting waiting, finally
8. Look at pic, looks like crap get blinded by the camera display light in process
9. Where did it go?, I can't see a thing
10. Wonder if Al saw it

Pretty similar to my experience though I brought my video camera out instead of my still camera. I briefly tried to video it but it was too small and dim to focus on and was moving quickly so I gave that up and just enjoyed it. It did seem to disappear before it went all the way down. I suspect that was because the sun wasn't shining on it anymore (earth's shadow?). I'll probably try to see it some other times and get a better view.

I was also wondering if anyone else around here was trying to see it and if anyone would see me out here and wonder what the heck I was doing. :D

I saw it again yesterday night and had a better experience. It wasn't as cloudy and it got brighter. It was also higher in the sky. It was interesting to see it dim out and then be gone while it was still pretty high in the sky.

Tonight looks like it could be even better, supposedly lasting for 4 minutes.

I haven't heard anything about it until this thread. At what time and where in the sky will it be visible tonight? Thanks.

BTW, did anybody see the hot air balloon on Friday night? I first heard it before it passed over my house low. Our power had gone out for a couple of hours Friday night, so everything was quiet. It then went over the golf course and appeared to go down in Carlysle or just on the other side of 407. We wondered if it was having problems or it intended to be where it went down.

Check out this link:

It will be visible (is sky is clear) around 9:39 PM tonight for about 4 minutes... starting 12 degrees above north.... so look to the north and the east as it moves from the north to the east. I'd say it looks like a moving star.

I believe we did see it Sunday night. We went outside around 9:39, and we saw an object moving across the sky. It did look like a moving star, but it reminded me of a very high flying airplane. I started to write this response last night, but I lost my internet service before I could finish. After checking everything, unplugging and plugging, etc., I called Grande, and apparently they were having some sort of issue. I don't know when it was resolved, but thankfully today it is back.
