Trying to decide where to move....

Postby AmyLee78 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 1:11 am

We are possibly moving to Texas, from Northern California. We might look in Flower Mound, but Lantana may be an option too. What is the population there? How many elementary, middle and high schools do you have? Access to grocery stores/Walmart/Target? Can we get Verizon FiOS or another form of high speed tv/internet? What is the average rent for a house at least 2200 sq.ft? How long is the commute to Dallas. That is where the husband will be working.

Thanks in advance for any replies I might get....If I think of anything else to ask, I'll be back!

Oh yeah....Do you all get thunderstorms there?

Also, we'll be looking for a nice gun range to go to. We have 4 guns and like to go shooting a couple of times a month. What else is there to do in Lantana, Flower Mound and surrounding areas?

Oh and besides Walmart/Target, is there easy access to other stores like Home Depot, Costco (or Sam's), etc?

The Lantana Development is part of http://www.Dentonisd.org. We have 2 elementaries and a Middle school located within the development. The High School is a short drive away. Wal-Mart and Super Target are the closest Grocers and they are about 5-7 minutes away with no traffic. Verizon FiOS is available. We have it. We love it. I don't rent. I don't know. The Commute to Dallas has several options and much depends on the time of day your husband would have to leave. With no traffic, Downtown Dallas is approximately 35-40 minutes away. There is a commuter train system nearby, but its complicated as you'd have to switch trains once on the way. Yes, it will rain from time to time. Thunder and lightning, too. I'm sure someone can point you in the direction of a gun range, that's not my thing. Lowes is by Target and Wal-Mart. Across the street from them in fact. Sams and CostCo are in Lewisville and are about 13 - 18 minutes away with no traffic.

I hope these answer most of your questions. The others can guide you on the items I'm unaware or not in the market for. Good Luck!

right down the street>> http://www.dentoncountysports.com/ website is a bit "busy"

Do you like traffic? plenty of it here...should drive 407 from Lantana east on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to really get the full experience of 407

traffic worse in summer when schools out, however our main road out is undergoing constuction, which is painfully slow, leading to traffic frustration.
My husband drives to Dallas, however, he doesn't usualy have to go during traffic times. He can make it in 35-40 min as stated above.
We just, last July, had a 20 year storm, depends who you talk to, some say its a once in a lifetime storm. Destroyed everything, I had to by a new car, everyone had to get a new roof, so make sure you ask if roof has been replaced cuz it should have been.

Thanks for the replies everyone (to the ones who were SERIOUS.) Are school buses provided for the schools, especially the high school if it's not actually in town? What is the name of the high school?

We are serious. You asked the same questions. I know it's another sub-forum, but folks aren't likely to want to repeat themselves, again.

To give you an idea, the areas you're asking about are maybe 10 minutes apart. I'm in Flower Mound and can be in Lantana in about 10 minutes. We're all basically in the same, less than 10 mile area, actually most might be in a 5 mile radius.

BTW, Lantana isn't a town, it's in the unincorporated County, but is a development so big that people sometimes refer to it as if it's a town, it's easier that way. :)

Do we get thunderstorms? Oh, my do we ever!! From about March through June we get clobbered every couple of weeks it seems. Tornado warnings are common, tornado's touching down are not super common, but they do come around. North Texas probably gets 10-12 twisters that actually touch down every year, but they almost always seem to hit in the middle of a field (though two went through major areas in the last two years). Lots of hail and very strong straight line winds the last few years, as well. Brutal summers, which I have to assume you already know. But from October through March, the weather is fantastic most days...winter is a crap shoot. Some years it's very cold (lows in the teens) and lots of ice, some years (like this year) winter passes us by completely.

When we moved here 6 years ago, traffic was non-existent except at one major intersection about four miles away. Today it's a mess due to the extremely fast growth and the length of time it takes to get road projects completed.

Edit: I lived in NoCal for a few years...unless you live well inland right now, the summers will be a shocker for you. Highs are in the 90s to 100s every single day from May through the end of September. The mornings are wickedly humid, but it burns off around lunch time. The nights don't really cool down...just around 80 most nights. Enjoy :D

Amy,

I moved my family here in September 2011 from Northern Cal (San Jose). We lived in Flower Mound for 8 months while our house was being built in Lantana. I can say, for the money and family atmosphere, Lantana is the place to move. Lantana has a population of approximately 8600 and has a few elementary and high schools within walking and short driving distances. Our little one is 3 years old, so we take him to a day care in Lantana (North Star Academy).

There is a Walmart and Target within 5 miles (note, these are SUPER stores, much bigger than the ones we had in California....even bigger than the "Super" stores Walmart and Target in the Bay Area). Although there are no Safeways, there are Albertsons, Krogers, Tom Thumb, Sprouts, etc... within close driving distance. There are Home Depots and Lowes everywhere (one across the street from Target and Walmart). Sam's Club and Costco's are within 15 to 20 minutes from Lantana.

Verizon FIOS is big out here and the speeds are close to comparable with NorCal, the prices are better.

Rental prices range from $1400 and up, depending on the area, size and age of the home (in Lantana). We rented an apartment (2 bedroom) for $1300 in Flower Mound and loved the complex.

The commute to Dallas can take anywhere from 35 minutes to 75 minutes, depending on the time of day and location in Dallas. I commute to North Dallas and it takes me 45 minutes (36 miles at 7am).

Boy, are there thunderstorms here! NOTHING like what we had in Cali. Scared the crap outta me the first time, but now enjoy them.

Not sure where you are in Nor Cal, but Lantana is night-and-day compared to San Jose. Very family oriented and the "down home" feel and southern hospitality really shine on, from my perspective.

Californication.
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." -Marcus Tullius Cicero
