eBook readers - Kindle vs. Nook vs. Sony. vs iPad?

Postby Uther » Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:19 am

I'd like feedback from those readers here that have an eBook reader.

I just spent an interesting 30 minutes in the SaHV Barnes and Noble being given a tour of the Nook and it looks tremendous. I wish I could compare the other eBook readers similarly.

I think that Amazon's Kindle might have the edge in selection and that that probably outweighs all other considerations.

What I'm not so clear about is who or what is the content supplier for iPad reader and the Sony (and other miscellaneous readers).

I don't have any, but I saw the Kindle at Target, so you can get your hands on it there if you want to check it out.

I think eReaders will explode when the price comes down to $99, which I think it might by Black Friday or Christmas this year.

But I'd want one that supports an open format... and one that doesn't let someone come in and remove the stuff I've bought, like with the Kindle.

I digress...

Funny enough, just today, Amazon announced a new, more powerful, yet lighter and smaller Kindle - with the same 6" screen as the current Kindle - for $139 for WiFi access and 189 for WiFi and 3G models.

Yeah, that was great timing.

Well $139 is getting closer to $99. It's getting more and more tempting. I don't read much, but I think my wife might like one, even though she says she doesn't want one. :)

I probably wouldn't mind an iPad, but I think I will wait a bit more to see if there are any good Windows 7 offerings coming up. I want to at least wait until the 2nd gen iPad before I buy another computer-like toy.

Off-topic, but if you want to have something like an iPad but don't want the iPad, then look at this and act quick.

i have the kindle and the ipad

the ipad is not a good reader in my mind because i like to read as i go to bed and the screen being lite up doesn't appeal to me, but I love my kindle. I have the first edition kindle and it's used by me every single day. I run a app called calibre which is basically like itunes for kindle or any book reader and it works great..

I have downloaded books as well on the kindle and it works great....

the ipad is the best device because it can do so many things but reading outside on the ipad is virtually impossible but on the kindle it's just like reading a regular book...

sony doesn't seem to be getting any market share and the nook is kinda late to the game but may be good, but if my kindle broke today I would absolutely have to have another one. I fly with my kindle. It's got at least 40 books in there and not even close to be filled up memory..

I just "broke down" and pre-ordered a $139 kindle (Wi-Fi only). I think it will be nice for a future vacation we're planning.

I saw the nook at B&N yesterday. It was interesting, but I found it a bit slow (as in unresponsive) and cumbersome to operate.

My mom had the first Kindle which she gave to our daughter when she purchased the bigger version. She likes it because it will read to her, provided the book she purchased has that option. My husband likes his iPad quite a bit and does his bedtime reading with it. The brightness of the screen means he doesn't have his bedside lamp on, something the tiny dog and I appreciate.

I received my Kindle 3 a few days ago. So far I am really liking it. I can email PDF's to a special email address and it auto-downloads to my Kindle.

What I don't like is paying $139 for the Kindle but $60 for a cover with a light in it. :(

With Barnes & Noble up for sale, with rumors of massive store closures in the future, I would worry about buying their proprietary device. On the other hand, if brick and mortar stores are failing, maybe they will redirect their energy toward improving the Nook and building their online presence.

Too lazy to look it up online, but is there any other way to get pdf's onto the Kindle? I have some pdf books that are 30 to 50MB.. so emailing them is out of the question.

Thanks. Good news articles that brought back memories. It reminded me of often visiting a Waldenbooks (or maybe it was B. Dalton) at the North Hills Mall, which is now rubble, in my younger years.

Sorry to see those booksellers go, but I rarely, if ever, buy anything from them.

I am sorry I sold my Amazon.com stock when it was about half the price it is now (though still made money on it). :(

I think you can hook it up to your computer via USB but I haven't done it that way.

Amazon seems to imply 50MB or less is OK. Keep in mind possible 3G charges. My Kindle doesn't support 3G so I just use WiFi and there are no extra charges.

use calibre, and then you can just automatically convert and upload to the kindle over usb, it's super easy and very very fast.
