Postby admin » Tue May 22, 2012 11:49 pm

The Social Security Administration announced the most popular baby names in Texas for 2011. Jacob and Sophia topped the list.

The top five boys and girls names for 2011 in Texas were:

Boys:
1) Jacob
2) Jayden
3) Daniel
4) Jose
5) David

Girls:
1) Sophia
2) Isabella
3) Emma
4) Mia
5) Emily

Earlier this week the federal government’s top official for baby names, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced Sophia and Jacob were the most popular baby names in the U.S. How does Texas compare to the rest of the country? Check out Social Security’s website -- http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/babynames -- to see the top baby names for 2011.

In addition to each state’s top 100 baby names, Social Security’s website has a list of the 1,000 most popular boys’ and girls’ names for 2011 and a list of the top 50 names for twins born in 2011. The website also offers lists of baby names for each year since 1880.

The federal government has a "top official for baby names?" Excuse my French, but WTF? Or is this some uplevel journalist reporting sloppily and thinking that would sound better than "some guy in the SSA?"

After some 2-5 minutes of research: Yep, Michael J. Astrue is the Comissioner of Social Security Administration, not some "top official for baby names."

Also:
Michael James Astrue is an American lawyer and, under the pen name A. M. Juster, a poet and critic. He has served as Commissioner of the Social Security Administration since 2007.
He's a poet and you didn't know it? :D

&deity almighty, get your facts straight. Journalists are higher on the evolutionary scale than politicians, but not by much - not the way they misreport and sensationalize every event and fact.

And here is the self-promoting web page for A. M. Juster. More codswallop.

The above was a cut & paste from their press release, so I wouldn't call what they issued as journalism.
