Postby admin » Wed Apr 11, 2012 8:12 am

From the Denton County Sheriff's Dept:

DCSO units were dispatched to an accident with injury this morning at 7:35am at the intersection of Lantana Trail and Stacee Lane. A second grade female student was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle to school. The child is reported to have an injury to one of her hands.

Thanks Max.
Can we not get a crossing guard there? It is a horrible crosswalk. People hardly yield to the xwalk. The blinky crosswalk signs are too small and don't do any good (and malfunction 99% of the time).

From eyewitness post on FB:

A 2nd grader was hit by as she road her bike across LT. The teenager driving was headed South on LT. I don't know if he was going 40 or 20. She was thrown off heer bike prabably 10 feet up in the air. The whole thing happened in front of me.

When the school first opened, parents were manning the crosswalk, but stopped when they learned they would be personally liable for any injuries.

In response, the FWSD installed the pedestrian-activated crosswalk signs and implemented the school zone. The crosswalk signs have had problems communicating so the boards recently agreed to install a wire between them under the road to replace the transmitters that don't always work.

Nothing like adults and their priorities. Geesh.

How about make them bigger. I've noticed that it is even really hard to see the lights unless you are right up on the sings - even at night - when only one is blinking - and nobody is anywhere near the crosswalk.

How do the other districts do it? I see crossing guards on my daily commute for Lewisville ISD, and I know Grapevine has them as well. I wouldn't expect parents to do it. However, this should be expected of the school district.

That poor little girl!! Hope she is okay. I'm sure the teenage is scared poopless at the moment (had to add poop  )

And I don't think it should be the parents resposibility to man the cross walk, especially if they would be liable for injury. You know that the US is a love to sue country. It should be the districts responsibility. At Rayzor they have teachers that man the crosswalks to cross to the school and by the gazebo (in the afternoon), why can't they have teachers do the same at Blanton? Shouldn't it be safety first?

Crossing guards are usually employees of the local PD or extension thereof or at least overseen.

I don't get people not doing what's right to try to keep kids safe because of that slight, almost hypothetical chance of liability. "IF", that's a place that kids need to cross to get to school. As parents we take care of our kids first, period.

I hope that little girl is OK. It sounds bad from the description - "She was thrown off heer bike prabably 10 feet up in the air." I hope it is a lot better than it sounds.

I agree that school safety shouldn't be a volunteer program, especially where the unpaid volunteers have legal liability (the saying "no good deed goes unpunished" comes to mind). If there should be a person there for safety because there is a school there or nearby, then I think it should fall to a paid school or law enforcement official.

Now THAT'S common sense.

I just realized, so this intersection is about 1 mile from the schools? That obviously makes it more difficult since there's no local PD. That just means you do what you gotta do until a better plan is come up with. Sue me for trying to keep your kid safe? Go for it.

We're going to have to disagree. An adult standing there, trying to help other people's children, then a teenager hits one of the children and the good Samaritan gets sued? Uh, no. Not gonna do it. Change the law, change the prevailing attitudes, whatever. While we have lawyers that sue people and people that deploy said lawyers, I follow the advice of lawyers. :) It sucks, but that's what it is.

I am a parent of a Blanton child and we received an email saying the victim was released from the hospital with no major injuries, "just soreness." Thank God!

You're taking the easy way out hiding behind the hypothetical. If I'm there, I'm in the road stopping traffic until it's safe for the kid(s) to cross. Nothing changes about how you get the kids across, you get them across safe. No law suit. :)

I pray that child is ok! I cannot imagine how scared she musta been or how scared her parents were when they got the call. Did we think our kids would go unharmed with open drive what you want speed.
