Plant Sale on 407 near Chinn Chapel

Postby Rosemary » Tue Apr 10, 2012 7:10 pm

Has anyone stopped at what appears to be a make-shift nursery on 407 near the corner of Chinn Chapel? I've noticed passing by that it has been getting quite large. I'm wondering if it's worth checking out and if the prices are competitive.

I purchased my spring flowers and shrubs there a couple of weeks ago and was pleased with the selection and pricing. They were friendly and offered great service. As of that date, they only accepted checks or cash, no credit cards. I would add honest/trustworthy to the description as well. I was overcharged by $50 when I purchased ten knockout rose bushes. They listed for $25/each, but when you purchase two or more, they are discounted to $20/each. When they realized the mistake, after I had already used the only check I had with me in my wallet, they promptly refunded me $50 in cash. This is not the surprising part, what surprised me was that a few days later I received a note from the owner of the company apologizing for the error and she included a check for $3.50 to refund the sales tax that I was charged on the $50 overpayment but was not refunded in the $50 in cash. It never dawned on me, or concerned me, but it was a class act none the less. My experience was excellent...

It is "Lisa's Nursery." The lady lives in Double Oak and previously had an operation on the corner of McGee and 407 in Lewisville. She's relocating her business to the current premises, but it will be seasonal. She's rather nice (I stopped there and we had a look at her flowers) and has a pretty good selection IMHO. Not as nice as Calloways, but nice. Prices are comparable to Calloways and many plants have the same labeling as similar plants at Calloways. She had a few items that we could not find at Calloway's though.

I bought a few things from Calloways the other day (bigger stuff) and was happy, until I remembered Schmidt's. I stopped by today as I'm still buying and planting, but even bigger, and was blown away with what they had. From annual color to 20' trees.

Not related except to say, don't forget about those that are always there. Although now I may check out "Lisa's" for smaller, seasonal and perennial stuff once I get some more progress with the big stuff. I'm glad to hear it's someone local, not some dude from Syracuse that came in to set up 364 roadside shops staffed with 11 years old's from the "inner city" that couldn't cut the magazine biz. :D

The one time we stopped at Schmidt's, I was less than blown away. Not only with the selection, but also the lackluster service. Maybe it was an off day and it was about 2 years ago. I would prefer to support small, local individuals, but then they have to deserve my support.

As for Lisa's, local definitely. Mom and high-school aged son were working there the two times we stopped by.

I think there were some changes with Schmidt's in the last few years. I'd never been and honestly hardly ever noticed it, even driving by. But yesterday I was really impressed, with selection and service. The guy was about as nice as can be and the stuff that had made me have to get my phone to take pictures so I didn't forget. :)

I'm puzzled by the outdoor nature of the business - does she just leave the plants outside for any "deviant" to steal at night? Also, I'd be nervous about protecting the plants during stormy weather. Hmm.

That's an interesting question. Perhaps the expense of putting the plants inside some type of structure exceeds the risk of theft or bad weather damage.

Now THAT'S common sense.

I noticed this year Home Depot has constructed an enclosure to house the outdoor plants, they previously had them out as well.
