Facebook angers Instagram users

Postby Uther » Tue Apr 10, 2012 4:12 pm

Facebook became "uncool" when it snapped up (sprry, couldn't resist the pun) the photo sharing app, Instagram for $1 billion.

When did Facebook become so uncool? (CNN article.)

One just have to love the metphors in this piece. :)

Facebook ... spent $1 billion to gobble up a much-smaller competitor, the photo-sharing app Instagram.

When it did so, it stirred up a caldron of ill will that the "People of the Internet" have been harboring toward Mark Zuckerberg's once-hip company. Some Instagram users said they were downloading all of their photos and then deleting them from the app just so Facebook couldn't get its hands on them.

Pundits weren't kind to Facebook, either. David Horsey of the Los Angeles Times, writing about the Instagram purchase, noted that the company is looking more and more like "Big Friend," a gentler variation on George Orwell's all-seeing Big Brother. Data indicate others share that view, too. A new poll, conducted before the Instagram news, found that 28% of Americans have an unfavorable view of Facebook -- twice as many as disapprove of Apple and nearly three times as many as Google.

This backlash highlights a new reality: As a technological juggernaut, Facebook is more Microsoft than Tumblr. To use a musical analogy employed on Twitter, it's the Nickelback to Instagram's Bon Iver.

I noticed my daughter and her friends are heavy users of Instagram on their smartphones and iPods. I guess most of this will pass over their heads.

I think Facebook was stupid to pay so much for that small company with no profit (not even sure if they had some, if any, revenue).

30 million people are uploading photos that Facebook can "tag". That's just the inventory. Then there is what they can or will do with it in the future. And nowadays a billion dollars for a company is not that much. Microsoft couldn't buy Intuit back then 90's?) for a billion and mark Cuban got a billion for broadcast.com from Yahoo...

Great. I should be getting that $1 billion offer for my little company any day now. A billion bucks isn't much nowadays, ya know. Plus, I actually make a little profit, so maybe my little business is worth $2 billion! :D

Well, how fast is your little company growing? Instagram is only a few years old and have 30 million users. That's a prime criterion. The other one is when a company is mature enough to make a profit, then the valuation is done differently from when it is in a rapidly expanding phase and needing VC funding. That's what made Google so rare pre-IPO when they were already turning a steady, and huge profit.

Well I don't have that many users, so I'll take $500 million. Are you listening Facebook? Google? Microsoft? Apple? If $1 billion isn't much, then $500 million is nothing. :D

I know several public people, musicians, entertainment (local) etc. that tear Instagram up! It's all they use for everything from personal promotion. So many were using it, I started checking every day for when the Android version would come out. :)
