Lewisville ISD Embraces Cellphones in Class

Postby admin » Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:32 pm

This year, the Lewisville Independent School District is encouraging students to bring their own technology to class. Laptops, iPads and even cellphones are no longer against the rules: http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/tech/Lewisvi ... 11738.html

Only drawback is, they're not telling us what and how they will support it. So we don't know if an iPad wil lbe more suitable than a netbook, or a smartphone or a chromebook. We don't even know if there is WiFi in the schools that the students may access. They are not saying anything about network filters, firewalls or antivirus products.

The kids are already using their smart phones, tablets etc. and for right now, they aren't using wifi at school. They are working towards that, but right now, and even then, they have their mobile network to do anything, appropriate or not. It's really not a big deal and I think the biggest use will be for calculators, music at lunch and texting/calling between classes. Although my daughter did say they texted answers today and got to see them show up in class. Pretty simple, but I'm sure the district thinks it really cool. The kids are yawning at it.

Mobile technology is part of their world and not near the big deal to them as it is to us, who got to watch teachers roll film back up after dropping the reel trying to put it on the projector. Besides, as much as they have to carry, unless they need to, not many will be carrying laptops, and maybe very few carrying tablets, but most are carrying phones/smart phones. And it seems to be a focus on them using technology, whatever form that comes in for each student. Not anything locked down to a form factor or OS or anything specific. I was taken aback at first, then realized it's a major part of their world, what a better way for them to learn more ways to manage it.

I got to turn the film strip once in second grade! One. Slide. At at time.

I agree with JKTex's point of view. It is a much bigger deal to adults.

But we got to use electronic calculators while our parents had to use slide rules.

Now THAT'S common sense.

Errrmmm..... I got to use a slide rule... :) So did my parents. We're traditionalists. :) And I know that 3 x 6 = 18.3! :D (Checked it on my slide rule)

I remember as a kid using an abacus. Now, we bought a required calculator for my daughter last year...it's still in the package, but good news, she needs it again this year.....but she carry's her EVO which has a better calculator on it, and it's smaller, and she can check Facebook at the same time. :D

Wish I kept that receipt from last year. There's $9 I'll never see again!

That's great. Now she can keep all her friends on Facebook updated with her latest calculations (surely the calculator app integrates with Facebook  ).

Now that Skype supports video on Android, they'll be Skyping for that.
