It would seem to me that the thieves know that we don't pay for extra patrols. :(

From the Denton County Sheriff's Office:

On 02/15/2011, Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of Claire Street in Isabel in reference to a burglary report.

Upon arrival, the reporting person, a representative of Lions Gate Homes, reported that an unknown suspect(s) broke into the vacant residence and stole the kitchen appliances.

The reporting person stated he left the residence on 02/14/2011 around 6:00 pm after locking the doors to the residence. He stated that the garage door was not locked but the door leading from the residence into the garage was locked. The reporting person stated that when he returned to the residence on 02/15/2011, he discovered that the microwave oven, gas oven/cooktop, dishwasher and wine unit refrigerator had been removed. The back door`s trim had been damaged and appeared to be the point of entry. It also appeared that the suspect(s) parked in the garage where they loaded the stolen items.

I don't have all the data to compare us to similar areas, but the other Denton Co. FWSD's pay for extra patrols and we do not. In fact, I just found out that FWSD #10 (Providence) set up their own patrols using off duty cops to supplement the DSCO.

Without the other data, its hard to determine how Lantana compares to other communities. Can we even compare apples to apples when Lantana has a more dense population than the other towns and FWSD's? The due diligence needs to be done in order to determine if extra costs will deliver additional "protection". Jumping to the conclusion that extra costs = lower incidents is a bad way to approach this. The people of Lantana need to ensure that the extra they pay creates dividends for them. I know Lantanians are already peeved off about paying a few extra bucks for recycling service upgrades/plans.

I believe the Denton County sheriff said Lantana incident response times were the same, or better, than other Denton county towns.

I would agree. Whether or not there are patrols, if what resources are available are made known, it give people the information they need to get brave.

It's likely just an impression that Lantana is a sitting duck. If the same criminal efforts were implemented in neighborhoods in other areas, their success would likely be the same, but other areas have, at least an impression of being better protected.

Are these new houses getting hit in areas people live nearby or is it primarily new construction?

From the Denton County Sheriff's Office:

On 02-18-2011, at 11:12 am., Deputies were dispatched to 700 block of Peco St. in Navarro in reference to terroristic threat report.

Upon arrival, Deputies met with the Complainant who reported an ex-employee of his walked into his residence without permission and broke his wife’s cell phone. The Complainant was not a home at the time, but stated his wife called him in a panic and very upset. The Complainant reported that his wife told him she was taking out the trash and when she went back inside the residence she left the garage door up. She walked into the kitchen, turned around and the suspect, an ex-employee of the Complainant, was standing inside the living room asking where her husband was.

The Complainant’s wife stated that the ex-employee was angry and was demanding to speak to her husband. The ex-employee yelled obscenities at the Complainant’s wife and broke her cell phone when she informed him that her husband was not home.

The ex-employee then left on a black motorcycle. No assault occurred. The incident is under investigation.

From the Denton County Sheriff's Office:

On 3/28/11, Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance call at a residence in the 300 block of Conroe Circle in Magnolia. The couple at the residence stated that a disturbance occurred when their 18 year old son came home from a party intoxicated and started an argument. The couple allowed their son to stay in his upstairs bedroom and sleep off his intoxication. After Deputies left the scene, the intoxicated youth left his room, went downstairs and attempted to force his way into his parent’s bedroom to continue the argument. The intoxicated youth then left the residence and went out into the street where he was met by the returning Deputies who were called back to the scene. He was arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to the Denton County Jail.

we need a dedicated Lantana officer. unfortunately we will most likely never get everyone on the same page, so till something changes we are sitting ducks, and more and of the criminal element are discovering it.

We have one. Not sure if that particular subdivision participates.

A neighborhood watch is great, but honestly, the idea that an LEO may be around at any time will deter the lesser ambitious criminal. Whether one is there or not, the chance is enough to do the trick.

Like the little town in GA that passed a law that required every household to have a firearm. It wasn't enforced, but just the idea sent crimes out of town. Mind game are a powerful defense.

Of course the drunk kid doesn't count, at that age when we get drunk, nothing will stop us from being an idiot except personal accountability, and Denton County Jail can assist with that.

Lantana has had an active Neighborhood Watch for some time. Lantana also has a McGruff House.
