Road Construction Update: FM 407 & FM 2499

Postby admin » Tue Feb 02, 2010 5:27 pm

It was announced at the January Precinct 3 Task Force meeting hosted by Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell that the bid was awarded for the next phase of FM 407 widening between Briarhill Blvd. and Chinn Chapel Rd. Construction is expected to begin in early spring.

They also said that FM 2499 from FM 407 to Highland Shores Blvd. should be complete and ready to open by the end of February, weather permitting.

There is a ribbon cutting scheduled Monday for Section III, so I would assume that they will open the rest of the lanes then:

The Town of Flower Mound/Mayor Jody Smith, along with Senator Nelson and Denton County Commissioners Bobbie Mitchell and Andy Eads, are hosting a ribbon-cutting for the newly expanded FM 2499 Section III (from FM 1171 to FM 407) and welcome your attendance.

The ceremony will take place Monday, February 8th at 2pm at the south entrance of Valley Creek Church, 5800 Long Prairie Road (FM 2499).

Wonder if they'll stand back and look at that beautiful new roads lanes and lane markings. It's almost as if the engineer's (maybe an elementary school project) wanted to design a road large enough for greatly increased traffic speed and volume then add in tricky maneuvers as a joke. Like feed 2 lanes with one lane such that there is an illusion of moving more cars on 2, but bottle-necking it with 1 so other lanes are still blocked. Or lanes that shift along the way. Some of it is almost comical, especially with the increased number of crazy drivers we have out here. :D

Have really enjoyed the 3 lanes of traffic in each direction, and really appreciate their efforts in finishing the project "early". Does anyone know why the 2nd left turn lane from 2499 to 407 is not open. Can not figure out any reason why they would not roll those barrells out of there. The 407 side is done and open and ready to take the 2 lanes of left turn traffic. Sure there is an answer, just curious on what it is....

Same as the westbound 407 to southbound 2499. I think it's better now, but there for a while the light cycle was 3 cars max., and with the way people pay attention, the 2nd and 3rd don't always make it through. I think it's up to 4 cars per cycle now. :D

I also wonder what people think their horns are for. How many times do you sit in traffic and watch 4-5 cars ahead, the lead car sit through all or part of a green light because they're doing somehting else, and the car or 2 behind them don't tap their horn to get their attention.

I could write a book on stupid things people do in traffic around here, like turn only lane means you have to turn. If you were texting or reading a book and didn't get in the lane you need to be in, turn as you should, THEN, correct your mistake. The 27 cars behind you don't need to be stopped and inconvenienced and almost hit because you aren't paying attention.

Update from the City of Highland Village:

The FM 2499 section 4 project contractor poured concrete on the south bound lanes at FM 2499 & Castlewood and is in the process of barricade removal at the FM2499 connection at FM 407. TXDOT anticipates opening the FM 2499 / FM 407 intersection to traffic in a few weeks, weather permitting.

Section 4 is currently planned to open around the end of March for both sides of the new roadway.

Construction continues on the northern portion of the project as allowed by weather and drying out from recent snow and rain events.

Design issues are being reviewed for the Castlewood/Northwood intersection, which is currently closed.

2499 & 407 Intersection

Postby Rosemary » Sun Sep 26, 2010 2:28 pm

I've been wondering for a few days, and I can't stop myself any longer from posting...why are they tearing up the newly installed medians on 407, necessitating left lane closures during the day on 407 going east? Traffic is backed up there most of the time even when the lane is not closed. I thought the entire intersection was completed last year. It also looks like they will be doing the same on 2499 soon, as there are barrels ready for something...anybody know?

Correct! This is part of the expansion of FM 407 from Briarhill to Chinn Chapel. Latest completion date estimate: November 2011.

I'm just so glad I was able to take advantage of an opportunity to leave the state, it's a mess, Flower Mound and HV are going to be plagued by road construction for decades it seems, as more and more traffic comes I would not be surprised that eventually bridges will be put into the 2499 corridor to help the flow of traffic that's not from FM or HV, but residents of Denton and beyond.

Maybe they could of dug a tunnel if they were not poking all the holes in the ground.

The Morris work has destroyed any aesthetics that road had before, and a prime example of what happens when you widen and tear up such a good road can be found in Southlake where they're extending a road from 377 down to Southlake Blvd. EVERY house along that expansion went up for sale, and none of them are selling. With road construction and gas wells I believe in the future FM residents are going to rue the day they did not put their feet down and declared that FM is their town and not a waypoint for commuters and gas speculators.

don't know what I was reading on the town of FM road update the other day, but I swear it saiud this section of 407 was still on schedule to be completed by spring of 2011. I thought it was a typo at the time.
