How to Post Photos

Postby Common Sense Al » Mon Jun 09, 2008 12:49 pm

You may ask... how can I post a photo on here?

UPDATE for the new forum (phpBB3): Just use the "Upload attachment" tab and upload the photo.

Or use the "old" way:

Basically, you need a hosting provider to upload your photo to and then you can link to it in your post by using the "BBCode" [img] tag. Your photo is not stored on LantanaLinks's server but on another 3rd party server.

Once you get the link (http://www.hostingsite.com/linktomyphoto.jpg) in the example, then you can post it like this:

A few free hosting sites that can be used:

http://www.theimagehosting.com

http://www.imageshack.us

http://www.photobucket.com

Photobucket provides image code links. Simply use the link it provides under "IMG Code - Forums & Bulletin Boards".

NOTE: The extension must be an acceptable image extension (like jpg, gif, etc) and it must be before any '?' characters in the URL.

If you have any questions, just ask here.

Too much overhead to store and index pics into the MySQL data base the forum uses. I would be willing to bet that all of the posts currently in all of the threads in LantanaLinks right now do not add up to the size of just one or two pictures.

I think it is more of a matter of simply not supporting it. The newest version of phpBB probably does, but I haven't looked into it. I think there may be also mods that you can use to add support for photos and attachments.

The last full backup of this forum was over 56MB, much more than a photo... the photos I post are usually only 100-200K.

56MB is nothing nowadays... besides, many of my valuable posts and reviews might be lost.

Wow. That seems pretty big. Looking at the count, this forum has 1,205 threads, 11,598 posts and 9,013 users. I recently estimated the move of an automotive forum to a new host that had a data base of about 225 MB, but it had 127,337 threads and 1,378,813 posts and 73,529 users using vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com).

I just compressed the LantanaLinks backup - and it compressed down to only a little over 4MB... so you have to be careful what you're comparing.

The 225 MB I referred to was uncompressed, but it was just and does not include the site and app. And no pics, by the way... :)
