More badness from Facebook.

Consumer reports estimates that 7.5 million users are under the age of 13, with more than 5 million being 10 and under.

Consumer Reports' survey found that their accounts were largely unsupervised by their parents, exposing them to malware or serious threats such as predators or bullies.

In the past year, the use of Facebook has exposed more than five million online U.S. households to some type of abuse including virus infections, identity theft, and—for a million children—bullying, the survey shows.

Or is it bad parenting?

I check out FB occasionally as my family back east sends pics and such. My older kids have “cleaned up” their FB as now some employers check it out. My younger daughter definitely has gotten distressed occasionally from FB and she will stop logging on for a week. Her idea, which I am proud of. Altho, when she comes home from school, she goes straight to her lap top.If I was a kid, I’m sure I’d be on FB all the time.

It is a great social network, but needs to be used in moderation. A word of advice: Don’t give youngsters a lap top til they are older and really need it and keep the “family desktop” out in view and limit their time logged on. As w/ most things, moderation, moderation, moderation.

That’s my 0.02

More Facebook evil:

Facebook Busted in Clumsy Smear on Google

Confronted with evidence, a Facebook spokesman last night confirmed that Facebook hired Burson, citing two reasons: first, it believes Google is doing some things in social networking that raise privacy concerns; second, and perhaps more important, Facebook resents Google’s attempts to use Facebook data in its own social-networking service.

Although it is in the Daily Beast, the author is Dan Lyons - for those who know, he was on the SCO side of the SCO vs. Linux litigation - at least early on. Take it for what it's worth.

Interesting... more good reasons why you can't trust the media and why money & power can control the "news" and "education" that the public receives. Glad this one was exposed.

Dang it... lost a really good engineer today. Someone uploaded and tagged a pic of them on Facebook. They were simply standing there in a group, all holding "adult beverages". They were wearing a company logoed polo shirt. Our internal Facebook monitoring team (we'll call them team for now) found the pic (since it was tagged). Since they were wearing a shirt with our company logo on it, they were "representing the company". And since the pic was of a group, the "perception" is that it was a "party". Now they don't work here any more. Everything in quotes is taken from the documentation I received from our HR department regarding my lost resource.

I am giving all my company logo shirts away...

Yeah, that's sad... in that case, I wouldn't wear company logos either because you never know when you're going to be "caught" doing something or being somewhere they don't like, whether really doing it or just having the appearance of doing it.

Maybe you can rip the logo off or something and still use the shirt? :D

But donating isn't a bad idea if it's got to go... might as well do that rather than throw it away, but I wonder if the company will question how the 'donatees' and "strange people" got all their company shirts? That might be worse for them.

I am one of the few people I know who has never been and will never be on FB.

From time to time I like to remind people of the massive amounts of data that Facebook collects about them. The type of data that the Government is prohibited from collecting, but that users freely, but sometimes unknowingly, hands over to Facebook. Where, of course, the Government can issue a subpoena and get all that data - years and years worth of it.

So let's start today's ramble down the "Facebook Information Highway."

A German student uses European laws to discover that Facebook has 1,200 pages of information about his online activities.

Guess what Mark Zukerberg calls Facebook users? Hmmm.. starts with the same letter as Facebook, but at four characters, it's not a family-friendly appellation, unless you lived in the 16th century.

Both the links above are to articles with many more interesting links.
