I think the amount of sugar consumption is the #1 problem with the American diet, followed by the high level of processed foods in the food supply.

Fortunately I don't drink soft-drinks often... but I do have a "weakness" for sugary crap. :(

Anyway, I'm glad that this is coming more to light.

My very progressive 85 year old Dad suggested I read the book “Sugar Solution” which apparently will open your eyes to the sugar situation. Haven’t read it but plan to.

BTW artificial sweetners are Not the solution.

"Our products are part of a balanced, sensible diet, and they can be enjoyed as a valuable part of any meal, including snacks,"

Best quote every in that article.

Didnt they once say the same thing about cigarettes?

If people weren’t so FAT and get diabetes, high blood pressure, knee problems, etc maybe the govt would back off. Obesity is a drain on our HC system.
I don’t like a babysitting country. People should be able to do what they want, as long as it doesn’t affect the rest of us. But it does. It does.

I'll have to agree with you... if one's bad habits or bad behaviors/decisions negatively affects others, then there's an opening for regulation... and putting a drain on the healthcare system affects others, unless by some chance you can actually pay for all of your medical care without insurance (which raises premiums for others) or someone else paying for it (unlikely!).

I think overpaid medical staff is a bigger drain on the HC system. The same as overpaid professors in the educational system.

Try telling a nurse that the next time they are taking care of you. There is a lot nurses do behind the scenes like being a patient advocate and making sure drugs are compatable, tests are done, dr. notified, etc.
Nurses are absolutely not overpaid. Over worked? Yes. Under staffed? Yes. Under appreciated? Ditto.

Soft drinks *are* dangerous. This poor 30-year old woman died from drinking them. Or so the New Zealand Coroner thinks.

Of course, she was drinking around 2 gallons or nearly 10 liters (Imperial @ 4.54 liter/gallon, not American at 3.7 liter/gallon) of the stuff daily.

The 30 cigarette-a-day habit wasn't contributory.

Don't forget the damage soda does to teeth... especially to kids' teeth. Isn't Mountain Dew suppose to be some of the worst stuff for that? At least that is what I seem to recall.

Don't forget good dental hygene, especially when drinking Mountain Dew. :P

Image
A male patient in his late 20's. Excessive consumption of the popular Mountain Dew beverage has caused considerable damage to the surfaces and structures of his upper teeth. Damage to the lower teeth is limited to enamel surfaces. Multiple crowns and veneers are the most popular treatment solution for this extent of enamel and tooth structure damage.

Near total destruction of teeth. A 20-something year old computer programmer with a six pack a day habit of drinking Mountain Dew. Due to the near total devastation, bite and occlusal problems were a problem. For this degree of tooth erosion that has affected every single tooth structure, comprehensive tooth replacements (bridges, dentures, implants) and enamel replacements (veneers) are usually indicated, along with rebuilding a new occlusal relationship.

Here's what my teeth look like: :D

Maybe there could be a new smiley with rotten teeth for people who drink a lot of soda.
