Komen foundation & Planned Parenthood

Postby admin » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:06 pm

Planned Parenthood was disqualified for funding from Komen for mammograms because of criteria that barred donations to groups that are under investigation, but Komen reversed its decision today after facing mounting pressure from pro-choice lawmakers and accusations that the breast cancer awareness organization had bowed to political influences.

It's a shame they backtracked. I will "doubly" make sure not to give them any funds until they stop supporting PP.

I was also upset to hear their reason for stopping PP funding, that it had nothing to do with right & wrong & abortion, but some other reason unrelated to abortion... but nonetheless it was a good decision, originally, until they reversed it.

As for abortion being political, it's not political, it's a moral issue, of right & wrong.

In any case, I think they really shot themselves in the foot. With their original decision to cut funding to PP, they made pro-lifers happy and others mad, now with their reversal, everyone is mad.

It was amazing the media attention this got though.

And I think it was a good thing in that more people know they support PP now... and they tied their name to abortion, by tying it to PP.

Common Sense Al, only 3% of Planned Parenthood services are abortion related, and NONE Of it is federally funded. It has been illegal to to pay for abortion with federal funds since the HYDE amendment since 1976- but hey why let facts stand in the way.
Can you explain to me exactly how Komen was justified in anyway by their original descision. Cancer screening is a HUGE portion of PP services, cervical and breast. In many places the only place women have to go for low cost women's health care is PP. By cutting off funding Komen was effectively cutting off the ability for some women to get screened.

Al, out of curiosity, you associate planned parenthood with abortion? In other words, let's not plan any of it?

Hmmm... this may clarify:

I'm talking about "Planned Parenthood", not planning to be parents. :D

Money is fungible, so how do you know that the money you give them isn't going to abortion? You don't.

Cutting off funding to PP is always justified on the basis that they perform abortions.

Let's say they were killing 1 year old children... would you donate to them and tell them, "hey, I know you are the nation's leading killer of 1 year old children who aren't wanted, but here's $100 to be used only for cancer screenings". Does that make sense? Not to me!

There are other places to go than PP and other health services that could use the money to provide the same type of service.

Y'all are wasting time on Al on this subject.

I had a couple of good zingers, but remembered, they'd be ignored and would only give him another chance to break out his radical morality soap box. :)

True... if you think you're going to convince me abortion is OK, and funding PP is good, then you're wasting your time. :D

There is no shortage of healthcare providers to fund (that don't do abortions).

I waste my time with Al on just about every subject. However, I stand in strong solidarity on this point.

A. It is wrong to take the life of an innocent human being without proper justification
B. Abortion takes the life of an innocent human being
Therefor C. abortion is wrong.

Al, Who would you fund that provides birth control, pap smears and female care for poor people. If not planned parenthood, who does that?

Local healthcare providers & charities including county health clinics, mostly funded through medicaid, Catholic hospitals and clinics and medical centers, and a few not-for-profit clinics... I'm sure it varies by area. When 'Obamacare' kicks in 2014, then a lot more options should become available. Unfortunately I don't think there is a 'national chain' like PP that provides the services, but there are other options.

But it doesn't really matter, because none of it is an excuse to justify abortion. One shouldn't support the killing of unborn children so that others can get pap smears. There is no justification for the direct taking of innocent life.

You can't focus on that specific question can you? No, because the answer is "who knows" other than a few possible options that are publicly funded and you want to keep shoving the abortion issue in everyone's face. How about the majority of what PP does.....

If you saw the news tonight you may have seen the interview with the 26 year old mom who's been going to PP for 10 years. When asked where she would go for female care if it weren't for PP, without hesitation she said would be going to the ER for it. That's the reality, it's the easy out, out of tax payers pockets for non-specialized care. Most women like that aren't in a position to be driving around looking for clinics and med centers hoping they weren't walking in to hack shops.

Like I said, it doesn't really matter because it still doesn't justify the abortions they perform... abortion is unjustifiable.

Another reason why I am for universal healthcare... but you're not so you're probably OK with all the taxpayer money being spent on unnecessary ER visits because it's someone's only choice? :D

Anyway, the ER only has to provide "stabilizing" care or something like that... they don't have to give mammograms and birth control pills. I'm sure there are other options in DFW besides PP, she just hasn't found them yet. When she does find one, she won't have to keep driving around.

Not too sure if United Way still gives to Planned Parenthood, but I used to work for a corporation who strongly supported United Way and asked their employees to contribute. A coworker refused to give due to United Way's support of Planned Parenthood due to to the abortion issue.

It would be interesting to know how many potential contributors would give directly to Planned Parenthood and those organizations that filter down to them--or existing contributors go away--if Planned Parenthood were to stop performing abortions?
