Inauguration prayer controversy

Postby admin » Tue Dec 30, 2008 8:30 pm

President-elect Barack Obama's choice of Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation drew one kind of protest. Whether the evangelical pastor offers the prayer in the name of Jesus may draw another, according to the Assocated Press.

In the recent past, the distinctly Christian reference to Jesus Christ at a national civic event offended some, and even prompted a lawsuit.

...because those people need something to complain about...yet their quest for all-inclusiveness puposely excludes Christians. They'll get over it. It's a prayer to a God many of them don't believe in, but the vast majority of American's do. How that is offensive is beyond me.

Wish the complainers had something better to do than complain and file ridiculous lawsuits. Maybe they just want the attention or want to fight God so they can feel powerful. The scary thing is, they'll keep trying and eventually they'll start winning lawsuits (seems the way it usually works).

I have always felt that the left asks for tolerance but refuses to be tolerant in some cases. They have to realize that Obama now represents the entire country, even the people they don't like.

esemerson, I'm not sure of your spiritual leanings...but if you are not a spiritual person in general or a Christian specifically, does the thought of a prayer at the innauguration offend you personally?

I ask because I'm curious...I have a feeling you could probably care less and wouldn't have thought to be offended had some hyper-left person not suggested you should be offended by a prayer.

Anyway, if this all comes across the wrong way, I apologize. I am genuinely curious if, as a liberal leaning guy, this thing deserves the attention it's getting.

No prayer does not offend me. In fact if you look far enough back in my posts you will see that I think prayer should be back in schools.

Look, just because I lean left on the majority of issues it does not mean I am against religion.

Now, the same people who are complaining about Rick Warren offering a prayer at the inauguration are expecting tolerance from the rest of the country. It just rubs me the wrong way is all. They need to get over it. A lot of Americans like Rick Warren so should we alienate them too?

If Obama wants a shot at being a great president he can't cater to the democratic base all of the time. He is now showing his base that he represents everyone. I think the complaints are more about that than anything else.
