Parent Appreciation Week Fraud Alert

Postby admin » Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:20 pm

To ensure student safety Lewisville ISD (LISD) is informing the community about fraudulent "Parent Appreciation Week" phone calls.

LISD has been informed that there is an individual placing illegitimate calls to some students in the area, which reference the district. The individual explains that the reason for the call is LISD "Parent Appreciation Week." Please note that this individual is not affiliated with LISD and anyone who receives such a call should report it to the local police department. Anyone associated with the district should not ask a parent for a student's direct phone number. As always, student safety is a high priority. We urge you to take this opportunity to talk with your child about safety measures, which include how to appropriately respond to unsolicited phone calls.

In summary: When a stranger calls asking for your childs phone number, don’t give it to them.

It is possible they already may know what car you drive, how many kids you have and the sports they play which is proudly displayed on the stickers on the back of your car.

Never understood the intelligence of having such information proudly displayed on a car.
Ex. “Excuse me, son. You are the one who plays soccer, right? Or is that your brother? Well your mom sent me to get you as her Hummer broke down when she was getting your sister at gymnastics…"

Do you have *any* proof that any child's security has ever been compromised by a proud parent displaying the kid's achievements either on the back of the car or at home? I think we circle an ever tighter spiral of trying to protect our kids from more and more "dangers." We won't ever have a record of 100% of people living to a specified age. In trying to protect our children too much, we probably warp them in ways that we cannot even foresee.

Sure, make them wear a helmet when they bike, but not putting the soccer sticker on the back of the car? Please.

I saw a show on this and the guy did say that displaying your kids names is not a good idea, its simple common sense to me, but as seen here not always present.

Another show guy needs to make a living appearing on TV.

Had one of those visit my house to Baby-proof it before my daughter was born. Gave me a list as long as my arm, wanted >$5,000 for the work and stuff.

Sent him packing and my daughter is, miraculously, still alive.

I watch shows too. And don't believe everything I watch. So you put a soccer sign in the front yard displaying your kid's first name, supporting the soccer team. (I HATE soccer) Any idiot can look up the address on DCAD and get the kid's last name. So what? What is the perp gonna do? Hang out at school's out time and try to find a "needle in a haystack". Go into the school and ask the secretary for a class schedule for "Little Johnny"? Show me some common sense and tell me what is the great harm from a front yard sign, based on the show you watched.
