Thanks for the posts. Not too worried about hollow sounds as we have a problem w/ the whole floor sounding like rice krispies when you walk on it. I am not sure what would cause that. We paid extra for concrete floor leveling.

That is definitely a problem. It sounds like the adhesive has failed. But what caught my attention is the last sentence, about leveling. You should never have to pay extra, it should be part of the installation. Meaning, it's not a line item or an option, it's something that has to be done for a correct install. The flooring itself can also be a part of it. Engineered hardwood can be floated which means it's not glued down, the planks are glued to each other creating a large "sheet" that just lays on the floor. That is an acceptable installation in certain applications and it won't sound like rice krispies.

It's also important to point out, engineered hardwood and laminate are not the same thing at all. Pergo manufactures laminate flooring. I'm not sure how similar the installation methods are, but the products are very different.

our floor, foundation was prepped, in our sons room the foundation was really bad, had a big drop off, they pretty had to repay a new foundation over it. We tend to be perfectionist, we were on our hands knees knocking and if we found a spot, we had them fix it.

I bruised my knuckles doing exactly that! I decided I needed to find something other than my knuckles to tap the floor. I also walked barefoot late at night or other times that it was dead silent, looking for places that made any sound at all by walking. So far we're pretty happy.

Where you had spots injected, has it held up and did it correct the void? I assume they weighted the floor down so it would stick it? We're giving ours some time then I'll see if I find anything that's worth having done. I think we may have one small area that will become a high traffic area once we get everything done.

Dirt/dust under the flooring causes that. If the prep didn't include a good sweeping and vacuuming, a floating floor will crackle no matter how level the sub floor is.

Depending on what product it is (and there is a big difference), and they're installation method (just as important), that "could" be a great deal.

Do you that have wood floors and have carpets, have pads under them? Since we ordered regular carpet, bound. I am concerned about how rough the back is and if it will damage the floors. I have read on the interenet that you need these natural jute pads to go under them, as opposed to regular rug padding. But I am getting conflicting opinions. I was told by guy at Lowes you can't put regular carpet padding under them cause it will damage floor. Not sure.....would appreciate some insight

The pad is more for protecting the rug. The polyurethane should protect the wood but as dust builds up under the rug the friction will reduce the life of your rug.

We are looking to replace our carpet downstairs with hardwood floors, but we are having hard time deciding between solid wood (scrapped and stained on-site) and engineered wood. Della Floors carries Anderson, brand considered the best in business of engineered wood floors. What bothers us about solid wood is the no warranty part and where engineered wood individual boards can be replaced when needed, no such thing with solid wood. Not worried about water much and no pets.

Considered bamboo? Ecologically more friendly.

As for the rest, not sure what bothers you. A hardwood floor is just that - wood. What warranty do you need? The engineered wood has a manufacturing process that needs a warranty against a defect in manufacturing.

Either one, you need to make sure it's installed correctly, including prep, but engineered is hard to beat.

People think of laminate when you say engineered at least a most people I've talked to do. We're at about 2 years on ours and surprisingly, even with 2 little pups that run and slide and do burnouts on it, no a scratch one from them; even after grooming when they're paws have become alien claws until the sharp edges wear down. We have maybe 1 or 2 small marks that look like the distressing but I know they were man-made, or I should say child-made, from significant drops. But again, I only know because I saw when it happened and they're tiny, and look like the distressing in the flooring.

Cost isn't much different either. We've had a couple of issues, things I should have pushed to have address up front, but only 1 appeared to have been installation related and then a few that were product related but none of impacts appearance or even function.

Well, have a quote for $5800 for solid wood and $8900 for engineered wood. Of course, from different places. Both well reputable places from everything we read and heard.

Don't underestimate the wonderful qualities of low-maintenance and durability.

I don't think I'd ever get real wood again... I already had my experience with that in my previous home.
