Local Ben & Jerry’s Will Free-peat Its Free Cone Day EffortAnnual Giveaway, Thwarted by Tornados, Will Now Occur Tuesday, April 17
Plano, TX (Grassroots Newswire) 4/12/2012 - Around the country and around the globe on Tuesday, April 3rd the public celebrated Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day as usual with peace, love and free scoops for all. However, Texans looking for a taste of the euphoria experienced quite a different phenomenon.
No, it wasn't that Texas seceded from the union, and it wasn't a decision from the White House. This decision was made by a much higher power - literally. And so it happened that while fans were enjoying their free cones everywhere, Mother Nature decided to flex her muscles and brew up more tornados than the local meteorologists could count on all their fingers and toes. Sustained wind gusts up to and over 111 miles per hour forced the cancellation of the annual Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day at the local scoop shops.
"First and foremost, we want people to be safe; we’re fortunate that our neighbors, family and friends made it through this without any loss of life and that is worth celebrating,” said Ben & Jerry's owner and Grand Ice Cream Czar, Hunter Rose. “Suffering through the tornados AND canceling Free Cone Day isn’t a fair outcome for our community in Dallas!"
Rose and the crews at his three scoop shops had prepared in the months leading up to the April 3rd event to have thousands of scoops, cones and cups at the ready. But with most schools on lockdown for several hours at the end of the school day, many of those who would normally participate in the annual tradition were never given the opportunity. Rose explained, "We had also partnered with the North Texas Susan G. Komen Foundation, and we not only did not get this worthy cause the exposure they would normally receive. We want a Do Over!"
Not one to give up, Rose has rescheduled Free Cone Day for
Tuesday, April 17 from 12:00 - 8 PM at all three of his locations: 1501 Preston Road in Plano,
The Shops at Highland Village, also in Plano and at 2851 Craig Drive in McKinney.
The ice cream team is calling it a Free Cone “do over,” and invites all of the residents of Dallas to join in on the fun. “Even Mother Nature is welcome to join us,” joked Rose. “We just ask that she be on her best behavior this time.”
