Town of Flower Mound Confirms New Case of West Nile Fever

FLOWER MOUND, TX - The Denton County Health Department epidemiologist has confirmed another Flower Mound resident has been positively diagnosed with West Nile fever. This is the fourth human case this year in the community.

West Nile fever is caused by the bite of a mosquito infected with the West Nile virus; the Town of Flower Mound Environmental Services will increase surveillance and trapping operations in the approximate one-half square mile radius surrounding the specified area on July 25.

In the event that mosquito samplings are found to be positive for West Nile virus, the Town will schedule a mosquito spraying event in the approximate one-half square mile radius surrounding the area. Prior to any spraying event, the public within the affected area will be notified with community notification signs.

When it comes to protecting yourself and your family from mosquitoes, always remember the "Four D's,” as follows:

-Dusk and dawn are the times of day you should try to stay indoors. This is when mosquitoes are most active and are considered major feeding times.

-Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside. For extra protection, you may want to spray thin clothing with repellent.

-DEET is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent. Always wear repellent when outdoors, and choose products that contain up to 20 percent DEET.

-Drain standing water in your backyard and neighborhood - old tires, flower pots and clogged rain gutters. These are mosquito-breeding sites.

Town staff will provide further information if mosquito samples are found to be positive for West Nile virus. Flower Mound Environmental Services responds to all mosquito concerns with an inspection of the area, larvicidal treatment of any potential mosquito breeding areas, and increased efforts to eliminate areas of standing water. For more information, contact Flower Mound Environmental Services at 972.874.6340.

Well, they're spraying, it seems in more areas now which is good if it really works. However.....

They post signs a day or 2 before with the times the truck(s) will be spraying; between 10PM and 4AM = Cool!

Truck surprises people driving by spraying while they're walking, many with dogs, jogging, kids outside playing...by 9PM is when I first saw it = Not cool!

Aside from the prime time resident hose down of skeeter spray, I've noticed a marked decrease in those tiny little boogers.

I sprayed around the house the other night for general stuff which I hope also got some of the skeeters that were still hanging around.

I can be out in the evening and may see or feel 1 or 2, if that. Before, I'd be looking like a tweaking crack-head dancing around like I thought I was being attacked by miniature aliens that were hiding a pipe and handful of rocks. Then come in and be itching all over. (aliens gone by then)

Would it be a surprise to learn that some of the citizenry of FM believe that gas drilling is causing the jump in WNV cases and is also behind the town's willingness to participate in the county's aerial spaying program? http://www.facebook.com/groups/flomocares/

FloMo cares has become a complete joke. It's got just enough self-proclaimed "experts" (of the keyboard species) to make it dangerous with all the manure it produces. On top of that, the individuals with 1 agenda, make stuff up to get people worked up into a panic, and it works. I've never seen such a concentration of well educated people so willing to drink whatever is handed to them, then follow the light to the boot fitting. Just an observation however..... :D

Agreed. I had to stop going out there, well, because it's out there.

Doesnt surprise me. When you have an organization that's leaders are dumb as a bucket of hammers, as Forrest said, "stupid is as stupid does". Not a brain cell working in that group.

It's not them, it's the foil hat wackos that have nothing better to do than drink Cool-Aid and use the internet to prove anything they can make up, then all the others sipping the same Cool-Aid jump into their boots and get to step'n. :D
