Update from Dick Cook:

I think most of you know that Tom is recuperating successfully from lung cancer. That diagnosis is often a death sentence but Tom, who is missing a lung now is reported cancer free and is in a rehab facility trying to rebuild his strength. Those of us that know Tom, a retired army military police Sergeant Major know him as a fighter and a survivor. Give ‘em Hell, Tom.

Former Mayor Bill Wilkinson is also recovering from a serious illness but Laura says that he soloed driving this week. I believe he had total kidney failure but is recovering with the use of dialysis. So here’s to two tough men on the road to recovery. Keep on pluggin’, guys.

Update from Mayor Pidcock:


Hi everyone, it's been a while since I sent all of you the progress of my recovery from the surgery to remove the cancer tumor and my left lung, and all the complications I experienced. The great news is that I was discharged from the rehab hospital today, April 3rd, and finally, after almost 3 months, I am home to complete my recovery. The first thing I want to do is thank everyone for all the prayers and for the grace and healing power of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I truly believe that without that, I wouldn't be writing this now.

To recap everything that happened, on February 13th the surgery to remove my left lung and the cancer tumor. The surgery was a complete success and I am now told I am cancer free. I was discharged from the hospital 5 days later but was only home for about 12 hours when I collapsed and taken by ambulance back to the hospital. I spent the next 3 weeks in intensive care because I had contracted pneumonia in my good lung, my kidneys had shut down along with my other organs and developed dangerous blood clots. I was told later by the attending doctors that it was touch and go for the next 3 days until they were able to stabilize me. When I finally became aware of everything that happened, I was so sick that I didn't think I would ever get well.

I was transferred out of ICU into a regular room and I remained in the Denton Regional Medical Center until I was transferred to the Atrium Rehab Hospital in Corinth, Texas on March 6th. The Atrium Rehab Hospital is for high risk patients and limited physical therapy is given to help regain strength. When I was first transferred, I was so weak that I was unable to stand and it was an effort to even raise my arms. The physical and occupational therapists did a great job and on March 28th I was transferred once again to the Continuum Rehab Hospital in Flower Mound, Texas. The Continuum Rehab Hospital is for patients who can tolerate more intense physical therapy for 3 hours per day. The typical length of stay is between 7 to 25 days. As the result of the intense therapy I am pretty self sufficient and can walk unaided for a short distance but require a walker for anything longer.

Because of the loss of my lung it is necessary for me to be on supplemental oxygen 24/7 at a 3 liter per minute level. However, when I was put back in the hospital I required 15 liters and have gradually reduced my need to the current level. Hopefully I will be able to continue to reduce my need and maybe someday I will only need supplemental oxygen on occasion. Only time will tell.

The only other problem I am dealing with is my voice. When they incubated me during the surgery, my vocal cords were damaged and I'm able to talk in just a whisper. It has gotten a little stronger since the surgery but it still has a long way to go. I was told it may take as much as 6 or more months to fully recover. However once I am able to have portable oxygen and fully ambulatory, I will see a ear, nose and throat doctor to see what he/she can do.
