Council gives Kroger expansion plan another chance PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 November 2011 22:30

A modernized, larger Kroger with a gas station on FM 1171 in Flower Mound is still on the table.

After hours of debate and a couple of failed attempts to get the super-majority vote needed to green light the proposed $14 million grocery store expansion, council member Tom Hayden made a motion that passed unanimously to send the issue back to Planning & Zoning committee members for reconsideration at their next meeting on Dec. 12.  The council could then take it up again at their meeting on Dec. 19.

Kroger officials said that without the proposed gas station, the company may scrap their plans to expand the store on the southwest corner of FM 2499 and FM 1171, which first opened in 1993.

Their specific use permit for the gas pumps was denied by the Planning and Zoning commission last month primarily due to traffic concerns.  Those concerns were reiterated Tuesday night by council members Al Filidoro and Steve Lyda, whose "no" votes temporarily denied approval of the project.

Kroger officials told council that the delay in approving the expansion could set the project back by one or two years due to a budgeting deadline at their corporate office.

One of the greatest obstacles a professional traffic engineer faces in applying sound principles of traffic engineering is the fact that "everyone is a traffic expert!" The unfortunate result of this attitude of expertise is the creation of traffic hazards when false theories of individuals or groups are put into effect. Watch the Kroger discussion and it certainly appears that Mr. Lyda and Mr. Filidoro are “traffic experts” since they do not listen to professional traffic engineers sound principles of traffic. Lyda has personally had bad experiences when fueling and Filidoro wants to close the second drive. The term empty shirt comes to mind.

Just a reminder, people can comment on these articles and don't have to prove what they are saying is true.

Here's a fact FM is in the top 10 cities in the US for income. Here's another fact FM is dead last in sales tax collection per capita. What elected offical has done anything to change that?

@Fact, or should I call you Mr. Filidoro... I think review of the drilling ordinance should have brought in more experts instead of what happened and you (Al Filidoro) was the one making a secret deal with Williams and then tried to pass the secret deal without telling the public or other council members. Good thing others on council saw you trick and stopped you. The NFL does not support Economic Development and will attempt to scare people. Setbacks don't need to be reduced and here is my prediction: If Al Filidoro is defeated in the May election he will move from Flower Mound within one year.

At Funny

Not so funny. It's all related. Anything that the former majority council can politicize, they will. Whether it be Kroger or Lakeside. Reality is if they get the former majority back in May, we will see the new Oil and Gas Ordinance repealed within two weeks of them being in office and we will all see gas drilling in our backyards as StopVotePolitic s predicts.

Stephenson is beholden to the Smith, Webb, Levenick, Wallace, Johnson, etc. Group who got her elected and Hayden is beholden to an oil and gas company that he does business.

@StopVotePoliti cs, you are the one trying to stir up politics. You are comparing a fuel station for gasoline to natural gas drilling? Seriously, that’s nuts. The natural gas drilling ordinance review is complete and in place. The town did what it could, which is increasing setbacks. The fuel station and the Kroger expansion is completely unrelated. You (mostly likely Filidoro or Lyda) is desperately trying to link the two issues, but I think everyone will be able to see through the feeble attempts.

Yes, we need quality business development but I'll prefer not having a fuel station in Kroger over pro gas drilling special interest group of Smith, Webb, Levenick, Wallace, Johnson..etc. If this group is back they will find some reasons to repeal the new gas ordinances and bring gas drilling to our backyards. My health, family and quality of life is more than important than anything else.

Kroger openly admited that with the failed approval of the project on Monday they may not have the funds for a few more years. How is that another chance? How is it another chance to go before a P&Z board that already rejected it? How is it another chance if Kroger has to go before their board to approve any changes? I'm not so sure this story got it right.

Editor, that's a pretty positive spin for a headline on a no vote story!

How come Filidoro brought up Market Street? I haven't heard anything about that for a year or two.

Is Al trying to cripple Kroger so his Market Street buddies can have a leg up?? We'd better watch who contributes to the NFL campaign in May....I smell conspiracy!! I sure would put it past slippery Al!!
