Bartonville teen values community service

Ben Collins

Ben Collins has made his academic and athletic careers his priority at Argyle High School, while building character at the same time.

The Bartonville teen is a member of the Varsity Basketball team at AHS and is President of the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) for what will be his senior year this fall.

“I have always loved sports, but especially basketball,” Collins said. “It is also incredibly rewarding to be involved in an organization like YMSL. YMSL is not just something on a resume, but an experience through which to take great pride, while also serving the community.

“We currently have about 200 boys and moms in our chapter, and last year, we did over 3,400-hours of service at local charities like Serve Denton, Special Olympics, The LV Project and The Salvation Army of Denton County.  That’s amazing.”

The Argyle High School senior is ranked second in his graduating class and carries a 104.3 grade point average.

Collins, 17, said his goals for this year are to do his best in the classroom and on the court, but also to enjoy himself and the environment that Argyle High School provides.

“I want to keep my grades up, win state in basketball and enjoy time with my friends; many of whom I have been friends with since first grade,” Collins said. “We have been working hard all summer to get back to state this coming basketball season and we won the Oklahoma State Team Camp. I will continue to visit colleges and decide my career plan, as well.”

Collins said he is currently interested in attending either Texas A&M, North Carolina, UCLA, Oklahoma, or SMU. He said if there was one thing about the world he could change, it would be something that would benefit everyone.

“I would make clean water available for everyone in all parts of the world,” Collins said. “That would be a great start.”

Collins is undecided on a career, but said he will likely study medicine, engineering or possibly business in college.
