Elizabeth Donnelly was recently selected as a McDonald’s Scholar Athlete and with good reason.
The Guyer 2017 graduate carried a 4.5 grade point average, while also being named to the first-team All-District Volleyball squad for two consecutive seasons (2015 and 2016) and is involved in numerous extra-curricular and community-service activities.
Donnelly said she was “surprised at school” with the award and said that it meant a lot to her that it was presented in the manner that it was.
“It is a huge honor to represent my school,” Donnelly said. “I was very surprised and so glad that I had friends, family and teammates there to celebrate with me and be part of the fun.”
Donnelly, 18, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Honor Society, and serves as the Energy and Environment chairperson for Guyer High School’s Student Council.
“We just completed a fun week of Earth Day activities,” Donnelly said. “We recycle and participate in Keep Denton Beautiful.”
The Double Oak resident is a member of First Baptist Church of Grapevine and is headed to Texas A&M University in the fall.
“I chose Texas A&M, because of the large network and variety of academic options it provides,” Donnelly said. “I will be majoring in Sport Management. The program offers many great internship opportunities. I also knew I wanted to attend a large, major university.”
Donnelly has decided not to play volleyball at A&M.
The Guyer senior has participated in two USA Volleyball National Championships with her club volleyball teams and said her greatest memory from high school came during her junior year.
“In the 2015 season, we went undefeated— 14-0 in our district,” Donnelly said. “It was awesome to be part of that team and then to be chosen as our District’s Newcomer of the Year.”
