Jesse James Fit: Never too late to start a new family tradition

Shanna Betzen walked through the doors of my first gym over 14 years ago, referred by a friend of my family in Highland Village. Since then she has become like family and been a loyal client/friend of mine through all my ups & downs of business and all the paths that have led to me forming Jesse James Fit. After training her and her mother Eileen just the other night, it came to me. I need to share their beautiful story!

You’ve trained at JJF for over 14 years now, what made you decide to bring your mother in for training?

When my mom retired from nursing, she fell apart!  In the course of 6 months, she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and had a brain aneurysm.  We were very lucky to have the best doctors, a lot of faith and with some time, she was on the mend.  I watched her struggle to do little things, getting up from a chair, getting out of the car, picking things up.  When she got the all-clear from the doctors, I asked her to come talk to Jesse.  At the age of 70, she was apprehensive.  She didn’t want to go to a “gym.” nor had she ever been in one.  She began training with Jesse and continued to get stronger and more confident.  We now work out together two times a week.  We have different goals and fitness levels but Jesse is able to keep us both going at the same time!  These are memories we will have forever.

What have you noticed about your mother since she has begun this journey with you?

She has blossomed! Physically she is stronger, steadier on her feet and she feels accomplished at the end of every workout.  Mentally, she has opened herself up to a whole new set of friends, social interaction and self-satisfaction.  I am always surprised when she meets a new goal or conquers a new exercise, it is fun to watch her improve.

How would you describe the atmosphere here at JJF and how is it different from larger chain gyms?

If there is such a thing as a family gym, JJF is a family affair, plain and simple.  The trainers and clients all share in accomplishments, goals and struggles together.  Everyone has their own set of goals but you are not alone in your adventure.  The staff is truly invested in your goals and journey and everyone knows your name.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing something like this?

Just do it!  The decision to make the call is the hardest.  Why would you turn down an opportunity to do something for yourself in an environment that makes you feel glad you walked in the door?  I promise you, it is the best decision I ever made for myself AND my mom.  Make the change with JJF, it is worth it!  You might just start a family tradition of your own.
