Bryant: Looking back at my first year

Just over a year ago I entered the realm of Flower Mound politics.  It has been a rollercoaster ride of a year, but all in all I am glad that I put my hat in the ring and still consider it an honor to serve the people of Flower Mound.

Being on Council may be considered a “part-time” and volunteer position, but it requires a lot of time for research, study, reflection, and listening.  Looking back I thought I was aware of the overall responsibilities for members of Council.  The reality was, I needed to learn a lot more to be an effective representative of the people.  There is so much more going on than what is shown during the open session of Council.  I am thankful that we have such a responsible and professional Town staff.  They welcomed my questions, offered me guidance, and helped me gain the knowledge needed to do my job – and they continue to do so today.

One of the most important things I learned is, I am a part of the process.  I am not the sole driver of change.  To get anything accomplished I must understand the entire process and be able to work with the team.  Failure to do that will result in thrashing about, not accomplishing much of anything.

Even through the difficulties of this past year, we have achieved many great things for our town.  I’m proud to be a part of:

  • Passing a budget that does not raise property taxes
  • Approving the Entrepreneurial Center – Innovate Flower Mound at Parker Square
  • Approving the building of the Western O&M station and temporary home for Fire Station No. 6
  • Strengthening our Tree Ordinance
  • Opening the Hound Mound
  • Approving the Heritage Park Phase 2 improvements
  • Initiating the Economic Development scorecard
  • Protecting the historic cabin and keeping it on its original foundation
  • Launching the Flower Mound Citizens Academy
  • Approving measures for dredging and bank stabilization of Rheudasil and Wilkerson ponds
  • Keeping Stryker in Flower Mound

There are many other accomplishments as well as projects in the works to benefit our town.  Specifically, I am looking forward to the landscaping innovations Prairie Commons will bring to our town.  I want Flower Mound to be a leader in responsible building, water usage, and landscaping.  There are additional projects and process reviews underway that will allow us to showcase what we can do to be good stewards of our environment without being a burden on commerce.

This past year has given me the pleasure to get to know many of the men and women who work for the Town of Flower Mound.  Each and every day they give their all to our town and citizens.  It is their hard work and dedication that makes Flower Mound one of the best places to live.  I firmly believe that we wouldn’t be on the many lists of great places without our Town Manager, Jimmy Stathatos, and the culture he brings to our town government.  With Jimmy and his executive team’s leadership, employee morale is up and our town is going in the right direction.

I knew our Police, Fire and Emergency Services are among the best in Texas.  Getting to watch them work, from the chiefs down to the newest recruit, it is clear to see that caring for our town is their primary mission.  Our town may go to bed early, but our first responders are always on duty and I am thankful for their service and dedication.

In many ways it is hard to believe it has just been almost a year since I was elected to the Flower Mound Town Council.  Thank you for this opportunity and I look forward to many more great things in the years ahead.
