Flower Mound Town Council Message

Michael Walker, Place 1, Flower Mound Town Council

After an icy end to February, I’m sure we are all looking forward to warmer weather, getting outdoors and enjoying our community.

Business Expansion and Job Growth
Since 1997, our Town has had, as part of its adopted vision statement, the goal of cultivating a dynamic economic environment. Over the past few years, the Council has worked diligently to bring new businesses and thousands of additional jobs to Flower Mound and with great success. For example, during the past two years, over 300 new businesses were opened in Town. As you may know, additional businesses bring commerce and jobs that support our local economy, tax base and specifically help boost our daytime population. This activity is critical for the success of both existing and potential retail and restaurant operations. Like you, I appreciate having new places to shop and dine that help keep our tax dollars in our community. These extra tax dollars help us fund many municipal projects like the recent treehouse/nature-themed playground equipment at Prairie Creek Park.

New Restaurants

If you love dining out on the patio, we have some new restaurants to look forward to in the coming months. Popular eateries, Taco Ocho and Jakes Hamburgers recently announced plans to open locations in Flower Mound. Mani Bhushan, a longtime Flower Mound resident, will open the third Taco Ocho location in the River Walk Market shopping center near Market Street. Taco Ocho is a fast-casual restaurant inspired by classic Latin cuisine and is expected to open by early summer. Jakes Hamburgers, known as the “best burger joint in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex,” will be filling the space recently vacated by Agave Azul, on the corner of FM 3040 and Gerault. Customers will have a broad menu of burgers, shakes and drinks to choose from while watching their favorite sports game this spring.

Speaking of restaurants, please be sure to check out Black Walnut Café at the corner of FM 2499 and Firewheel, which opened in February. Black Walnut Café serves an array of contemporary American, fast casual cuisine throughout the day, including selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Lakeside Business District News
We also have some new business announcements down in our popular Lakeside Business District. MI Windows and Doors is one of the nation’s largest suppliers of vinyl, aluminum and composite windows and doors. Over the next five years, the company will relocate more than 500 jobs to Flower Mound and become one of the Town’s top-three private employers. The second new business coming to the Lakeside Business District is Hardware Resources, one of the fastest growing manufacturers of cabinet hardware in the U.S.  The Flower Mound distribution center will serve as the growing company’s sixth national distribution center.

Outstanding Citizenship Award
You don’t have to serve on a Board or Commission to make a difference in Flower Mound. Many residents make a difference every day, and that is why the Town Council created the “Outstanding Citizenship Award.” This annual award is designed to recognize an outstanding individual or group each year that demonstrates exemplary service to the community. To qualify for this recognition award, the nominee must be a Flower Mound resident, or group located within the Town, and should display or meet two of the following criteria: strive to make a positive impact in the community, enhance the Flower Mound community and the lives of its citizens or address or fulfill a community need or concern. If you’d like to submit a nomination, please visit www.flower-mound.com/outstandingcitizen to fill out the online application.

Keeping You in the Know
Like the monthly message from the Council and Mayor, Town Staff strives to keep you in the know of what is going on in the community. Last month, the Town launched a new tool that helps keep you in the loop while you’re on the go, the new “FM Connect” mobile app for iPhone and Android users. With FM Connect, residents are able to access agendas, Town calendar, latest news, job opportunities, adoptable animal listing and a departmental directory. Perhaps the most popular feature is the Request Tracker, which has the ability to submit service requests (with or without a photo) such as code violations, beautification issues and needed repairs. Other FM Connect features include one-click access to the mobile websites for the Community Activity Center, Library and Parks and Trails Department.

Easter Egg Scramble

I look forward to seeing you at the Town’s upcoming Easter Egg Scramble, presented by Primrose Schools, at Jake’s Hilltop Park on Saturday, March 28, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. For more information, please check out our Special Events webpage atwww.flower-mound.com/specialevents.
