Foodie Friday: A Speakeasy? In Argyle?

We’re always on the lookout for a fun and unique spot to take Foodie Friday, which is why this week we were on a mission to have our first ever speakeasy experience atPrime in Argyle located in back of The Peddler’s Emporium off of Hwy 377.

We’ve heard rumors spreading around town about this place and finally had to go out there ourselves to find out what this place is really all about! And we were thrilled to meet owner Steve and some of his staff who have brought a truly unique twist to dining in Argyle!

When you first pull up to the Peddler’s Emporium, it looks much like any other small-town antique store – and when you walk in, that same vibe continues. And it’s not just for show! They sell all kinds of unique goods including a wide variety of Victorian Era items, Treasure Chest antiques, Tyler Candles and American Paint Company Chalk Paint! It’s every antique enthusiast’s dream!

And while you peruse the store, you can choose one of their Yancey’s Fancy Artisan Cheeses from New York to sample and order as an appetizer. By the time you get back to your table, they’ll have it paired with some crackers for your enjoyment. Prime in Argyle is actually the Texas distributor of these artisan cheeses and are in the process of pairing up with some local businesses like Wine Styles to offer wine and cheese tastings.

Then once you’re ready for some dinner, you just head to the back of the store and knock on the closed door for entrance into the restaurant – no joke! It really is like being at a speakeasy. It’s such a fun and unique dining experience that you cannot help but be excited for the meal to come.

When you enter the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by staff who all have “gangster names” to give it that real, authentic speakeasy vibe. And all of the Victorian era decor makes you feel like you’re right back dining next to Bonnie and Clyde.

As soon as we sat down, we were served with our choice of artisan cheeses and crackers – a hot habanero and jalapeno cheddar and a horseradish smoked bacon cheddar (which Traci claims she could have married it was so delicious).

When you dine at Prime in Argyle, you can choose from one of their two menus – their lunch menu which is served from 11:00am-2:00pm and their main menu which is served all day. Their main menu has been unchanged for 26 years and Steve claims it is a major part of their recipe to success due to the simplicity. During dinner hours you can choose between a Prime Steak or a Akaushi Prime Plus Burger and you can’t go wrong with either!

Traci and Kari ordered off of the lunch menu with the Prime Steak Sliders and the Steak Potato. Prime in Argyle only uses USDA Prime Steaks in all of its steak dishes and no matter what you order, you experience that glorious melt-in-your-mouth goodness. It’s seasoned and cooked to perfection and when paired with their Garlic Clove mushrooms, you absolutely cannot go wrong!

I ordered off of the dinner menu with their most popular cut of meat, the 6 oz. filet which was cooked perfectly and was again paired wonderfully with the garlic mushrooms.

After we all finished our main dishes, Steve brought out one of their infamous Akaushi Prime Plus Burgers for us to sample which was different than any other burger I’ve had and you could easily taste the great quality of the meat.

But don’t worry – we didn’t have a burger for dessert. Steve also brought us a piece of their cheesecake topped off with pecans and pralines which was so incredibly good my mouth is watering just thinking about it again. We each had to practice large amounts of self control to not finish off the whole thing!

The best part of the meal was that throughout the whole experience, we’d find ourselves constantly smiling. And that’s what Steve says he loves most about working in the restaurant business – the ability to give people a dining experience to smile about.

We cannot wait to head back out to Prime in Argyle with some of our friends and clients to show them what an incredible hidden gem this place is. I highly encourage each of you to book your dinner reservation TODAY! They can seat up to 40 people at a time, so move quickly before spots fill up, Foodies!
