Tyler Stern has a wide variety of interests that keep him pretty busy these days.
The Marcus High School senior is a member of the National Honor Society and Academic Decathalon, which he does while holding down a part-time job and playing bass in the local Alternative Blues band, Spectra.
Stern said he enjoys being involved because of all of the great opportunities Marcus has to offer.
Also a member of the school’s Junior Classical League (Latin Club) and involved in Theater, Stern said he is able to keep on task by employing a couple of strategies.
“I try to keep my life separated into little pieces that are more manageable,” Stern said. “I try to break things up, and do what I can, when I can and just try to stay relaxed, honestly.”
Stern said that he has enjoyed many things about his time at Marcus High School but said that he likes the people more than any other part of his experience.
“I really enjoy the teachers,” Stern said. “I really enjoy the student culture there, too. Everybody’s a lot of fun. The whole senior class is kind of involved in the same jokes…it’s just an amiable environment.”
Stern is looking at a few colleges at the moment, including Duke University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Chicago and Texas A&M University.
Stern is ranked 38 in a class of 754 students and has a 4.95 weighted grade point average.
The Marcus senior said he believes that Marcus has done a great job of preparing him for college.
“I think Marcus does a lot better job than most high schools,” Stern said. “There are a lot of opportunities for advanced placement classes, especially as an underclassman that I really enjoyed. I think that helps you a lot.”
Stern plans to major in biomedical engineering in college.
