Foodie Friday: Agave Azul in Flower Mound

Ever since we tried out Mi Sueno in Bartonville Town Center a few weeks ago, we’ve been anxiously awaiting when we could try out another local Tex-Mex restaurant! We felt like we’ve waited long enough this week, so we decided to have our team lunch at Agave Azul in Flower Mound.

Agave Azul has been open at its location in Flower Mound for approximately five years, but its original location in Downtown Carrollton has been open for ten years! Owner, Zotico Reyes (aka “Mr. Tequila”), runs the Flower Mound location with his sister, Gloria and they have another family member who runs the Carrollton location.

Reyes discovered his love for the restaurant business while he was working at his cousin’s restaurant in Irving and decided he’d probably enjoy owning his own restaurant. And then while vacationing in Cancun years ago, he visited a local tequila sanctuary which provided the inspiration behind Agave Azul, Dallas’ first and foremost Premier Tequila Bar.

The Flower Mound location is a wonderful place for families to come enjoy dinner together. You can sit out on the patio on a beautiful day and eat some good food and let the kids play in the nearby water fountains. Or you can come out for date night and enjoy one of their 200+ tequilas at the bar.

And the food is the perfect mix of traditional Mexican cooking, upscale cuisine and familiar Tex-Mex choices.

When you’re seated, you’re immediately welcomed with a bowl of tortilla chips and warm house made salsa which includes fresh ingredients and is perfectly spicy.

And I always recommend ordering the tableside guacamole to go with the chips and salsa. They bring out a cart and make it right there for you! And the finished product is a perfectly creamy guacamole with a hint of spice, herbs and acidity from the lemon juice.

And we requested some flour tortillas which are also made fresh in the restaurant and are the perfect conduit to enjoy some salsa, guacamole, or – Kari’s favorite – butter and sugar (she calls it a “dessert taco….”).

One of our entrees was the Salmon Salad which is blackened or grilled salmon served on baby spinach with tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and their special House dressing.

And the other was the Veggie Quesadilla. I love their twist on the veggies in the quesadillas too. Most places include onions and peppers, maybe with some mushrooms. Agave Azul includes grilled zucchini and squash with fresh onions and bell peppers. And it comes served with some more of their delicious homemade guacamole.

We were so full off chips and salsa and our entrees that we really debated ordering dessert. But the sopapillas sounded so amazing, we couldn’t pass them up! And I’m so glad we decided to get them because they were SO GOOD. They brought out two handmade fried pastries sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and served over a chocolate sauce with an agave nectar. I usually eat sopapillas with some honey, but after trying them with the agave nectar, I’m never going back! Between the fluffiness of the pastry and the subtle sweetness of the nectar, this was the perfect end to our meal.

So, whether you want to take the family out for some delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, or you want to head out with some of your favorite couples to enjoy an evening at the bar, head to Agave Azul this weekend! Between their food and the wide array of tequilas to choose from, there’s something for everyone!
