The Bartonville Town Council on Tuesday night accepted Police Chief Dave Howell’s resignation effective July 1, 2014.

Howell, 54, is the only police chief Bartonville has had since the town first formed the department in 2007.

His 28 years of law enforcement experience includes a long stint with the Irving Police Department, two and a half years as a Denton County Deputy Constable, and as a police officer for the town of Argyle.

Council members authorized the Mayor and Town Administrator to research alternatives for an interim Police Chief.

Meanwhile, council members continue to discuss the future of the Bartonville Police Department.

A committee was formed in May to explore consolidating the department with the Double Oak Police Department to allow for 24/7 coverage and reduced costs. Jaclyn Carrington and Jim Langford represent town council on the committee.

There will be a work session in July and a town hall forum in August to discuss options for the police department.
