Train crashes into truck trailer at Argyle crossing

A freight train slammed into a flatbed trailer hauling construction equipment at a crossing in Argyle Wednesday evening.

According to Argyle Fire Chief Mac Hohenberger, the bottom of the trailer became stuck on the tracks as it was heading westbound on Crawford Road just west of Hwy 377 (map) and was hit by the southbound train around 6 p.m.

“The truck driver was trying to jack up the trailer when he saw the train coming and jumped out of the way,” said Hohenberger.  No one was injured in the collision.

The train engineer told Hohenberger that he was approaching the crossing at 35 miles per hour but was able to slow down to 23 miles per hour at the time of impact.

“They were lucky,” said Hohenberger. “This accident could have been much worse.”

The Argyle Police Department said late Wednesday that Crawford Road will be closed at the crossing until at least early Thursday morning.
