Give the gift of a backpack

Mission Moms has not rested during the hot summer break!  What an amazing time for the community to continue to work together to help families that have met challenging times.  It’s still hard to believe the families at our Lantana schools are so often overlooked.  Mission Moms has not wavered in our determination to bring awareness and compassion.  Each mission is personal, for a specific cause, with a unique focus, helping extraordinary people.

All summer long, we have been providing food and books each week to many deserving families.  The experience has again rallied our community to help families in our backyard! Mission Moms meets Thursdays at the Lantana North Pavilion from 9-10 a.m.  Coming off the summer mission directly into Blessings of the Backpacks which provides backpacks to over 200 children at our community’s schools.

Back to School is a time of excitement and anxiety for so many children (and parents)! Couple that anxiety with fears of feeling ‘different’ and ‘not included’ and you have a child that spends weeks prior to school starting with a level of insecurity that is heartbreaking. It’s hard to fathom that it is happening in our backyard…and it IS happening! Stories of how a child carried his mother’s purse to school only to be made fun of by his peers, teasing because a bag is old, carrying a bag of the opposite gender are just a few examples of what we have heard.

Mission Moms was allowed to step in and provide new backpacks to the children and the smile on the faces was priceless! With those stories, we made a vow to never overlook the families at our Lantana schools! No matter how great or small the challenges; we will NOT ignore the needs HERE! Our goal is a very aggressive 200 backpacks for the 2013-2014 school year and we need your help!  Collection bins are located at Kwik Kar Lantana, Lantana Golf Club and North Star Academy.

Mission Moms Blessings of the Backpacks mission will be held the Thursday before school starts, August 22, at 9 a.m. at the Lantana North Pavilion. Please join us to make a craft to hang on our backpacks and bless the ones we will be donating. We are collecting for children at E.P. Rayzor and Blanton Elementary, Harpool Middle School and Guyer High School. Any additional backpacks collected will be donated to our sister school, Borman Elementary.

Coming up…Mission Moms will host their first annual Fall Fling!  Funds raised at the event will support our Thanksgiving and Christmas missions which provide food and gifts during the holidays to over 200 families.  The event will be held at the Lantana Golf Club September 14, 2013 from 6-10 p.m.  An adult evening of mingling, music and fun!  Go to Mission Moms at www.missionmoms.org to purchase tickets.

A parent dreams and prays for the hearts of our children to be full and open to serve.  The vision for Mission Moms is working each and every mission and our own children are the proof!  We are blessed to be able to give and teach our children to give.  One child at a time, we will soften the hearts of our children!
