Stephenson drops out of council race

Flower Mound Place 1 council member Kendra Stephenson withdrew her application to run for re-election Monday.

Stephenson announced that she had dropped out of the race during Monday night’s town council meeting.

During her announcement, Stephenson endorsed Place 1 candidate Mike Walker, who sits on the town’s Planning & Zoning board.

Walker and Joy Bowen are the remaining candidates for the Place 1 seat.

Stephenson released the following statement this morning:

It has been my honor to work with this Council and our wonderful staff to serve the residents of Flower Mound since 2011. Due to some exciting new career opportunities, and my most important roles of mother and wife, I can no longer dedicate the many hours required to be an effective member of Flower Mound’s Town Council. While this was a difficult decision, it is the best one for my family and Flower Mound.

I could not leave the race for Place 1 if I did not believe there was a clearly qualified candidate to occupy my council seat. This candidate is Mike Walker. Mike has continually demonstrated his commitment to the Town of Flower Mound, and his depth of experience in Urban and Community Planning and investment management will be a huge benefit to the Council. Just as important, Mike’s approach to decision-making will continue the calm, no drama governing style Flower Mound residents have come to expect over the last year.

The last two years have been an exciting time for Flower Mound. I am proud to say that since the 2012 election, the Town Council has made great strides in achieving all of the goals outlined during my 2011 election campaign. Desirable development has been approved, offering residents great opportunities to eat, shop and play in Flower Mound.

Residential developments have been approved that will offer increased housing options to all generations including young professionals, empty-nesters and seniors.

Most importantly, the approval of Lakeside DFW last November marks the first step in completing the mixed-use vision first expressed during the 2006 Master Plan Update process. A vibrant mixed-use community will showcase the incredible piece of property adjacent to Lake Grapevine.

I am proud to have been a part of the great team that worked to move Flower Mound forward, in a balanced manner, while respecting the history of Flower Mound.
