Flower Mound man helps public prepare for worst

With Dec. 21, 2012 rapidly approaching and doomsday prophecies and scenarios swirling about, one local company is offering an opportunity to stock up on essentials that would come in handy in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

Omega Survival Systems is a Flower Mound-based company started by Kelly Williamson, a former Medical Service Corps Officer in the United States Army.

Williamson said while there may be nothing to the prediction of an apocalyptic catastrophe devastating the world in late December, other phenomena, like hurricanes, flooding and economic crises are becoming more and more prevalent, and that it never hurts to take precautions.

“I was called back to active duty in 2004,” Williamson said. “I came off of active duty last year. I tried to figure out what I wanted to do, and I thought, ‘what do I know about?’ I knew that I wanted to have my own business.

“Since I was a medical guy, I knew about emergency medical procedures and all the gear that was needed, and I knew about tactical weapons, so I kind of put the two together, and I thought this might be a good opportunity.”

Williamson said one of the features recently added to the systems are gourmet emergency meals, which have a shelf life of 25 years.

“I added the emergency meals to it after the army highly suggested we have a back stock of food and water for three months,” Williamson said. “They wanted us to be prepared. This is a gourmet meal. So I put the food, medical and weapons together and realized we had a survival store.”

Williamson said he has different types of food to choose from, as well as water storage containers, emergency medical supplies and protection, and said that the emergency meals are much better than the standard, military issued MRE’s.

“These meals actually taste good, and it’s a hot meal,” Williamson said. “They are also a lot healthier for you than an MRE.”

Williamson started back in April and said he has had great feedback so far.

“The past couple of weeks, gun sales have been going very well,” Williamson said. “Food sales are doing well, and I’ve had a lot of people interested and calling to ask questions.”
