Board receives quarterly growth report

New home sales have slowed in some areas, but not all, according to a report by Templeton Demographics that was presented to the Denton ISD Board of Trustees at their May 10th meeting.

The report stated that single family home closings have dropped below 200 for the first time in five years, but the 380 corridor and Lantana continue to be the school district’s highest growth areas.

Denton ISD’s growth is anticipated to reach 28,892 by the 2015-16 school year and by 34,898 students by 2020-21 school year.

“These numbers outline our challenges. There will be some higher numbers in the classrooms. We’ll have to be back in the portable building business – which isn’t ideal, but it is what it is,” said Board Secretary Glenna Harris.

Statewide, Texas experienced annual job growth of 237,300 with a 2.3 percent increase, the highest in the nation.

“Texas is still growing and that’s good, but the tax base is not growing,” said Board President Jim Alexander.
