Event to promote literacy

Wonderland Montessori School in Flower Mound is hosting an event this week to support literacy in our community by raising funds for the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation.

A book fair, which will include a Family Fun Night, will run from March 23-25, and Sandya George, co-organizer of the event, said the book fair was designed to honor a legendary children’s author as well as give young people some ownership in an event that will ultimately benefit them.

“Dr. Seuss [Theodor Seuss Geisel] is kind of a children’s icon, and his birthday was the first week of March,” George said. “It’s also National Literacy Month. This event is basically an open invitation to the children to come and enjoy books and give back to their libraries.”

George said the organizing committee still welcomes donations of any kind to the LEF, but said what their hope is now is to see as many people get involved as possible.

“We want to make sure that everyone comes in so that their contribution can be participation and the event ticket,” George said.

George said the goal is to raise $5,000 at this year’s fundraiser

“This foundation uses the funds it raises to close the gap between funding the district receives and the resources it needs that are not covered,” George said. “Funds can be used for books, or if the library needed shelves, or if furniture was needed, or really anything to help it achieve its mission.”

The book fair will run this Wednesday through Friday, March 23-25, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Wonderland Montessori School.  The event will conclude with a pirate-themed Family Fun Night on Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. and will feature bounce houses, games, visits with local authors, concessions and vendor tables.  Admission is $5 per child.

New and gently used books are also being collected, which will be donated to the Flower Mound Library’s Used Book Sale fundraiser.
