A food drive to be thankful for

Wellington Elementary School in Flower Mound collected 55 frozen turkeys and over 15 shopping carts of all the trimmings during their 5th Annual Turkey Drive benefitting Christian Community Action.

The items will help CCA as they assemble 1,500 Holiday Meal Boxes this Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Wellington’s Community Assistance Coordinator Jennifer Gross was on hand each morning along with other volunteers to collect donations from the students.

“What started as me collecting a few turkeys and some groceries from neighbors each Thanksgiving has grown into something really amazing,” said Gross.

“In the past 5 years Wellington has collected over 350 turkeys and at least 65 grocery carts full of the trimmings.  We’ve been able to help a lot of families over the years.  I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

Girl Scout Troops 3838 and 1593 were also on hand to assist as well as various students who offered to come to school early and lend a hand.

“It’s so rewarding to see the students get excited about Turkey Drive and about the importance of community service,” said Gross.

“Seeing their little faces show up and hand me groceries always makes my heart so happy.  And there’s something priceless about seeing an 8-year-old pull a 15 pound turkey out of his backpack!”
