Scouts retire flags

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Service Unit 408 Troops 1430 and 1431, made up of fifth graders from Wellington Elementary, recently traveled to Camp Gambill in Sumner, TX and participated in a flag retirement ceremony.

The 19 girls spent the weekend working on several merit badges and the requirements for one – the United We Stand badge – had the girls learn patriotic songs, learn the correct way to fly an American flag, send cards to men and women in the armed forces, and name and discuss various American symbols.

Flags were donated to the troops that had been deemed “worn to a condition in which they should no longer be used to represent the nation.”  In all, four Texas flags and 10 U.S. flags were retired in the formal ceremony.
