Architecture firm recognized for new Flower Mound hospital

The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Texas/Oklahoma Chapter recognized the HKS-designed Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound project with a Healthcare Design Excellence award at its 2010 Design Excellence awards gala.  The award was presented on August 13 at the Weston Galleria in Dallas.

The hospital, which opened April 30, is a joint venture between Texas Health Resources and local physicians, through a partnership developed by Texas Health Partners.  Designed by HKS, Inc., the project features 103 inpatient beds, an emergency department and a wide range of medical services including services for women and children.

“We are excited and proud to have received the IIDA Texas/Oklahoma Chapter Design Excellence award for the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound project,” said Jeffrey Kabat, lead interior designer, HKS, Inc.

“This project exemplifies true collaboration, working with the owner and contractor to design a smart hospital that is aesthetically pleasing and healing while incorporating lean design, sustainability and an Integrated Project Delivery approach.”

The interior design solution resulted in a four-story hospital that meets the program requirements, while maximizing views to the densely wooded and beautifully landscaped site. Numerous views to nature are provided throughout the hospital. The lobby areas and meditation room on the first floor feature generous floor-to-ceiling scenes of the meticulously landscaped, lush courtyard. A vast majority of patient rooms and patient corridors also provide outdoor sights. In addition, numerous landscape installations create positive distractions for the patients, families and staff.

Special challenges included making the project as sustainable as possible in pursuit of a LEED-Silver rating. Carpets and paints were selected with low-VOCs to aid in this effort. LED lighting was used in the project to reduce energy consumption and minimize maintenance needs. High-efficiency mechanical equipment was specified to help improve indoor air quality and efficiency.

The IIDA Texas/Oklahoma Chapter Design Excellence Awards recognize the highest quality and achievement in interior design, and honor the creativity and innovation of the best of Texas and Oklahoma designers.
